Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and mechanically skilled Machine Operator to set up, operate, and maintain our Bartelt Horizontal Form Fill Seal (HFFS) packaging machine in accordance with established procedures and guidelines. This role is responsible for packaging type changeovers, post-operation cleaning, quality control, and ensuring continuous high-quality production with minimal downtime.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and monitor the Bartelt HFFS machine to ensure consistent, high-quality packaging output.
- Perform all necessary pre-operation activities to ensure proper equipment startup across multiple pieces of equipment.
- Operate and monitor equipment throughout the production run to ensure quality output and minimal unplanned stops.
- Perform packaging type changeovers, including adjusting film webs, forming collars, fill systems, and sealing jaws to accommodate different product sizes and package formats.
- Operate, calibrate, and adjust Mettler Toledo scale systems as needed.
- Disassemble, clean, and sanitize machine components after each production run or shift in accordance with GMP and food safety standards.
- Determine required materials, products, and resources needed for each production run.
- Read and follow job orders and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Inspect machine outputs for quality control, including seal integrity, fill weight, and print/date code accuracy, adjusting settings as needed.
- Provide detailed reports and logs on production activity, changeovers, and cleaning.
- Troubleshoot minor mechanical and operational issues, escalating to maintenance staff when necessary; perform preventive maintenance tasks as directed.
- Communicate effectively with team members and support teams to ensure continuous production of the correct product at high quality levels with minimal waste.
- Maintain housekeeping, sanitation, and GMP compliance throughout the shift.
- Follow all safety protocols, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and maintain a safe work environment at all times.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 2–4 years of experience as a machine operator required; experience on horizontal form fill seal or similar high-speed packaging equipment strongly preferred; Bartelt experience a strong plus.
- Experience operating, calibrating, and adjusting Mettler Toledo scale systems preferred.
- Familiarity with packaging changeover procedures and mechanical adjustments.
- Analytical, technical, mechanical, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of various types of machinery operation and trained to handle measurement devices and hand tools.
- Understanding of GMP, food safety, and sanitation standards.
- Hands-on training and experience in safety techniques and requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized work in a fast-paced, continuous improvement environment.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Physical Demands
- Standing and walking for the entire shift.
- Frequent use of hands to finger, handle, grasp, and operate tools and equipment.
- Climbing, kneeling, squatting, stooping, crouching, crawling, twisting, bending, and reaching.
- Must be able to work in tight quarters and hard-to-reach areas.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment
- Manufacturing/production floor setting.
- Exposure to moving machinery, varying temperatures, and elevated noise levels.
- Required PPE includes gloves, safety glasses, hairnets, and other gear as applicable.
- Shift flexibility may be required, including evenings, weekends, or overtime as production demands.
Pay: $20.00 - $26.00 per hour
