Position Responsibilities:
Duties to include:
- Assists registered nurses and/or LIP’s in the delivery of patient care, with regard to patient condition and age.
- Performs patient care in compliance with the Iowa Department of Public Health Paramedic Scope of Practice related to:
a. Maintaining Airway/Breathing
i. Airway (manual, nasal, oral, multi-lumen, esophageal/tracheal)
ii. BiPAP, CPAP
iii. Bridge Airway Devices
iv. Capnography/ETCO2 (End-Tidal Carbon Dioxide)
v. Chest Tube Monitoring
vi. Endotracheal Intubation (nasal/oral)
vii. Cricothyrotomy – percutaneous
viii. Gastric Decompression (nasogastric or orogastric tube)
ix. Needle Chest Decompression
x. PEEP (Positive End-Expiratory Pressure) – Therapeutic
xi. Obstruction (direct laryngoscopy/manual)
xii. Oxygen Delivery
xiii. Suctioning (upper airway, tracheobronchial)
xiv. Ventilation (mouth, bag valve, manually triggered)
xv. Ventilatory – Automatic Transport
b. Assessment
i. Blood Chemistry Analysis
ii. Blood Glucose Monitor
iii. Blood Sampling (venous, capillary)
iv. Central Line Monitoring

f. Lab
i. Adhere to strict procedures and practice of safety precautions to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases.
ii. Utilize standard procedures to determine positive patient identification.
iii. Verify, complete, and resolve orders in the EMR (electronic medical record).
iv. Complete lab requisition orders and produce appropriate labels for specimen tubes in the LIS (laboratory information system).
v. Obtain blood specimens from patients as required using established blood-drawing techniques.
vi. Centrifuge appropriate tubes to obtain serum/plasma for testing.
vii. Perform moderate complexity or point of care testing following standard operating policies and procedures.
viii. Assist with collection, labeling, and transportation of other laboratory specimens as necessary.
ix. Record results in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations.
x. Perform various quality control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
- Completes Point of Care (POC) testing.
- Provides psychological support to the patient and family based on assessed needs.
- Communicates any pertinent changes in patient condition or disposition and report unusual incidents.
- Performs related and routine clerical tasks pursuant to performing the aforementioned duties.
- Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school, and
- Current paramedic certification by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, and
- Current course completion card in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider by the American Heart Association, and
- Current course completion card in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by the American Heart Association
Desirable Qualifications:
- Phlebotomy experience preferred
