Position Summary:
We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Assistant who supports surgeons during clinical procedures, assists with patient care and pre/post-operative management, and helps maintain a safe, efficient surgical environment. The ideal candidate combines clinical knowledge, strong sterile-technique skills, excellent patient communication, and the ability to work well under pressure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the OMS surgeon during a broad range of procedures (extractions, implant placement, orthognathic surgery, biopsy, TMJ procedures, bone grafting, etc.) including instrument handling, suction, retraction, and tissue management.
- Prepare operating rooms and treatment areas: set up sterile fields, surgical instruments, implants and disposables; verify instrument counts.
- Maintain sterile technique and infection control standards (aseptic preparation, sterilization monitoring, proper disposal of biohazardous materials).
- Monitor and document intraoperative patient vitals and status as required; assist with local anesthesia and sedation support under surgeon direction and per office/state protocols.
- Assist with airway management and emergency procedures, following clinic protocols (e.g., basic life support).
- Perform pre-operative patient preparation: review medical history, obtain and document consents, take and record baseline vitals, prepare surgical site.
- Provide post-operative instructions, wound care guidance, and wound dressings; coordinate patient follow-up and triage post-operative concerns.
- Take and process intraoral and extraoral radiographs and cone-beam CT scans when trained and certified; assist with pre-op imaging review and implant/surgical guides.
- Maintain and inventory surgical instruments, supplies, implants and medications; place orders and ensure equipment maintenance.
- Clean, sterilize, and care for instruments and surgical equipment according to protocol and manufacturer recommendations.
- Maintain accurate patient records and document procedures, medications, and supplies in the electronic health record.
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to optimize workflow and patient experience.
- Participate in continuing education and maintain required certifications and licensure.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree or diploma in surgical technology, dental assisting, or related field preferred.
- Formal training or experience specifically in oral and maxillofacial surgery or hospital-based surgical assisting preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or will need to be obtained within 6 months of hire.
- State-specific permits/certifications for taking radiographs, administering nitrous oxide, or assisting with sedation (if applicable) must be held or obtained within 6 months of hire.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, sterile technique, and perioperative protocols.
- Familiarity with OMS procedures, anatomy, and implant systems.
- Excellent manual dexterity and ability to anticipate surgeon needs.
- Strong communication and patient-education skills; compassionate bedside manner.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in emergencies or high-stress situations.
- Accurate recordkeeping and basic computer/EHR proficiency.
- Team-oriented, reliable, punctual, and able to manage multiple tasks.
Working Conditions:
- Clinical/surgical environment with exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids; use of PPE required.
- Requires standing for long periods, occasional lifting of equipment/supplies, and fine motor work.
