Job Overview
At Charles Chester Plumbing & Heating, the HVAC Apprentice works alongside experienced HVAC Technicians and Installers to learn the trade while supporting residential, commercial, and construction projects throughout Northeast Nevada. This position is responsible for assisting with the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems while following Chester standards, safety procedures, and customer service expectations. Daily responsibilities include loading and organizing materials, maintaining clean job sites and vehicles, assisting with diagnostics and installations, learning proper HVAC startup and testing procedures, completing Foundation timecards and job notes accurately, and communicating professionally with customers and team members.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems, including air conditioning units, refrigeration equipment (such as ammonia refrigeration), boilers, and plumbing components.
- Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and HVAC design plans to ensure accurate system setup and troubleshooting.
- Support senior technicians in diagnosing issues using tools like ohmmeters and other testing equipment to identify electrical or mechanical faults.
- Participate in field service activities such as routine inspections, equipment repairs, and preventative maintenance on commercial or residential properties.
- Learn to operate welding tools and perform basic fabrication tasks necessary for system installation or repair.
- Gain experience in appliance repair and property maintenance tasks related to HVAC/R systems.
- Follow safety protocols diligently when working with refrigerants like R22 or R410A and handling ammonia refrigeration systems.
Qualifications
- Strong interest in construction, mechanical systems, or property maintenance with a desire to learn HVAC/R trade skills.
- Prior experience as a service technician or in related fields such as plumbing or appliance repair is a plus.
- Basic understanding of schematics, blueprints, or HVAC design principles preferred.
- Mechanical knowledge including familiarity with boilers, refrigeration systems, air conditioning units, and equipment repair techniques.
- Ability to work outdoors or in confined spaces while maintaining safety standards; valid driver’s license preferred for travel between job sites.
- Willingness to learn welding techniques and operate specialized tools like ohmmeters for electrical troubleshooting.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with attention to detail; ability to follow instructions accurately.
