American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and Cerner or Epic proficiency.

Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a Level III NICU
-
A home unit will be assigned on the first day of orientation; floating may occur to any like unit or patient location (MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds, ICU-to-ICU, ICU-to-MS tasks, ICU-to-ER holds)

Possible unit assignments include: 6 North Trauma Surgical (23 beds, general and vascular surgery, 1:5–6 ratio), 5 South Neuroscience (33 beds, CVA/TBI/seizure/craniotomy/spinal fusion, 1:5–6 ratio), 5 North Med/Surg Oncology (39 beds, MS/oncology including chemo patients, 1:6 ratio), 4 South Clinical Decision Unit (18 beds, general Med/Surg including COPD/CHF/sepsis/COVID, 1:5–6 ratio), 3 South Orthopedics (20 beds, joint replacements/fractures/fusions, 1:5–6 ratio), and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology (23 beds, urology/ENT/ortho/Med/Surg, 1:5–6 ratio)

12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week with potential for 48

Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month

No on-call requirements

Holiday coverage is required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy

EMR: Cerner (preferred); IV pumps: Plum 360; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Spacelabs
-
Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
-
Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for VS, ADLs, glucose checks), charge nurses, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs

Scheduling is managed on a 4-week cycle via Smart Square; self-scheduling is not available

Active AL RN license or compact RN license required

Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required

Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required

Cerner or Epic experience required; if experience is solely in ICU, Cerner is required

Trauma/surgical experience of at least 1 year required for Trauma Surgical unit consideration

Required clinical skills vary by unit and may include: wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG tubes, colostomy/ostomy care, C-collar, abdominal binders, PCA pumps, negative pressure wound dressings, CVL dressing changes, Foley care, and restraints

Chemo administration certification highly preferred for oncology unit

Ability to interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings required

One reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months required for consideration

DOB (day and month) and full SSN required for consideration

Copies of certifications required for consideration

Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible

First-time travelers will be considered with a minimum of 18 months Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and Cerner or Epic proficiency

Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked to assignment start date) before being eligible as a traveler

An interview is required; offers are not made automatically

Orientation for new or returning travelers (absent 1+ year) consists of 24 hours of classroom time followed by 24 hours on the unit; orientation for rehires is determined based on last date worked

RTO blackout dates are in effect and include: MLK Day weekend, Valentine's Day week, the entire month of March, Easter weekend, Mother's Day weekend, Memorial Day week, Father's Day weekend, July 4th week, Labor Day weekend, Halloween weekend, Thanksgiving week, and Christmas through New Year's

Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved, excluding blackout dates (blackout date exceptions require manager approval)

Scrubs may be any color
