About the Role
The Surgical Technician (Scrub Tech), under the supervision of the RN, will prepare supplies, equipment and instrumentation for each surgery performed. Experience with Cataract procedures required. The Scrub Tech will be responsible for anticipating and meeting the needs of the surgeon within a sterile field. The Scrub Tech will also be responsible for the decontamination and reprocessing of the operating room and surgical instrumentation. Included within this assignment is the responsibility for ensuring effective communication between the Scrub Tech and the Clinical Director, RNs, physicians, physician’s assistants, and other staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a high school degree or GED.
- Possesses proof (i.e. letter from hospital or physician) that he/she has received training and has been educated on basic aseptic principles and techniques.
- Holds current BLS certification.
- Minimum of 3 years clinical experience preferred
- Demonstrates ability to provide quality assistance to the surgeon.
- Communicates and works effectively with people.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Hepatitis immunization (will be provided at no cost to the employee) or documented refusal to be vaccinated.
- Evidence of negative Mantoux or chest X-ray annually (will be provided at no cost to the employee).
- Traveling to nearby centers will be required.
- Able to maintain extensive standing, moderate sitting, and retracting and assisting in the transfer of patients with appropriate number of personnel and/or devices.
- Physical ability to perform CPR.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds, surgical instrumentation or equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assignment of patient care based on patient assessment by the RN to meet individual patient needs appropriate to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Assisting the RN with patients on admission in a timely manner.
- Provides input as to patient’s condition on admission.
- Notifies RN and/or attending physician of any critical findings or changes.
- Accepts reasonable work assignments.
- Diagnostic and therapeutic medical staff orders appropriate to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Able to assist the RN in implementation of physician orders according to patient needs and physician requests.
- Demonstrates ability to carry out all assignments and procedures as assigned, according to department policies and procedures and demonstrated competency.
- Prepares the environment and scrubs for the surgical procedure appropriate to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Gathers needed supplies, instrumentation and equipment in advance of the surgical schedule.
- Updates surgeon preference cards, as needed.
- Reports missing supplies or malfunctioning equipment to RN.
- Opens surgical supplies, instrumentation, and suture; setting up the sterile field using sterile technique.
- Scrubs and organizes surgical instrumentation, draping, gowns before the surgeon scrubs.
- Handles equipment, instrumentation, suture, and drapes in safe manner.
- Maintains integrity of the sterile field, reports breaks in technique and requests resolution.
- Makes an effort to contain spillage of solutions and body fluids. Demonstrates the practical application of universal blood and body substance procedures, as well as the proper handling of other hazardous substances. Knows where to locate and how to access information in Right-to-Know manual.
- Is aware of electro surgical unit activating device at all times.
- Anticipates the surgeon’s needs and requests supplies ahead of time.
- Performs sharps and sponge counts with circulating nurse according to policy.
- Assists in dressing wound.
- Tears down the sterile field, contains contaminated articles.
- Disposes of sharps and hazardous materials in appropriate receptacles.
- Assists in the transfer of the patient to cart or wheelchair.
- Cleans the OR with appropriate disinfecting agents.
- Washes and reprocesses instrumentation.
- Bags and disposes of surgical waste according to policy.
Medication Preparation:
- Identifies and prepares medications delivered to the sterile field.
- Accounts for and verbalizes amounts of medications used.
- Disposes of unused medications according to policy.
- Maintains knowledge of commonly used local anesthetics, antibiotics, and topical hemostats.
- Obtains appropriate syringe and needles for surgical use.
Inventory Controls:
- Organizes storage areas for instruments and supplies.
- Labels by category, systematic storage.
- Maintains written log of supplies available.
- Re-orders supplies.
- Maintains clean storage facilities.
- Instrument Care.
- Documents instruments in need of repair.
- Catalogs broken instruments and calls for repair pick-up.
- Logs repaired instruments back into service.
- Acts as resource for inquiries from physicians or physician assistants regarding instrumentation.
- Reports and recommends surgeon’s request for instrumentation.
- Maintains instruments, cleans, disinfects, sterile processes for each use.
Other duties as assigned that are within the scope of practice and purpose of the position.

Pay: $35.00 - $40.00 per hour
