Job Summary
Meet the needs of the Perfusion Department through operation, processing, cleaning, ordering, storing, and testing of supplies and equipment. Provide assistance to Cardiovascular Perfusionist in the operation of the heart-lung machine and other major circulatory support systems.
Responsibilities
- Perform cleaning, sterile assembly, disassembly and correct functioning of the Heart-Lung machine, IABP circuit, Abiomed and CPS devices.
- Assure proper cleaning of contaminated equipment and disposal of hazardous waste. Utilize proper safety precautions and adhere to policies of Personal Protective Equipment.
- Accurately record patient data and demographics onto autotransfusion, IABP and other perfusion records for inclusion in the patient's permanent medical record. Record departmental required data.

- Assemble, via aseptic technique, operate, and disassemble intra-operative blood salvage equipment providing autologous blood and its components for transfusion to the surgical patient following the manufacturers standards and AABB guidelines.
- Advise physician and other clinical staff on the principles of counter-pulsation and its applications to patient care per manufacturers standards.
- Interpret and advise physicians and other clinical staff on the guidelines for collection, processing, and administration of intra-operative salvaged autologous blood products per manufacturers and the AABA standards.
- Perform plasma and platelet sequestration in order to provide autologous management of hemostasis in the surgical patient. Under supervision of a surgeon or anesthesiologist, actively draw from in-dwelling arterial or venous access sites to provide autologus physician directed products.
- Perform plasma/platelet pheresis under direct supervision.
- Operate, assemble, and disassemble intra-aortic balloon pump equipment. Perform troubleshooting to ensure proper operation including but not limited to: clotting, incorrect placement, incorrect timing, ischemia, and obstructions taking necessary corrective action per manufacturers standards. Work in concert with the primary physician to address the troubleshooting actions.
- Advise physicians of irregularities and improper operation of the unit and assist the physician with insertion as needed.
- Assist with retrieval of IABP patients from outlying hospitals, fulfilling policy and procedure guidelines.
- Test, clean and maintain all equipment that passes through the department.
- Interpret and operate the Vascular Blood Flow computer, record the results, and prepare the flow probe for sterilization when complete. Maintain and record the functionality and Quality Control of the device and probes.
- Perform quality control procedures on laboratory instruments in accordance with established guidelines taking corrective action as necessary per manufacturer or Lab Technical Specialist instructions.
- Demonstrate and document competency regarding laboratory policies and procedures as documented in the Vital Functions Laboratory annually.
- Perform moderately complex laboratory analysis including blood gas and elecenterolyte analysis, coagulation analysis, and automated cell counts under the supervision of the VFL Lab Technical Specialist.
- Interpret laboratory results to ensure accuracy and consistency with patient status.
