Position Summary
The Correctional Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct nursing care to incarcerated individuals in a secure correctional healthcare setting under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or physician. The LPN delivers routine and emergency medical care, administers medications and treatments, performs health assessments, and contributes to the overall health and safety of the inmate population while maintaining compliance with correctional security procedures and professional nursing standards.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care in accordance with physician orders, nursing care plans, and established correctional healthcare protocols.
- Conduct intake health screenings and assist with initial medical assessments for newly admitted inmates.
- Administer prescribed medications, injections, immunizations, and treatments safely and accurately.
- Monitor inmates for changes in physical or mental health status and promptly report significant findings to the Registered Nurse or physician.
- Perform routine nursing procedures, including wound care, dressing changes, specimen collection, catheter care, and vital sign monitoring.
- Assist with chronic care clinics, sick call, and specialty medical appointments.
- Respond appropriately to medical emergencies by providing nursing interventions within the LPN scope of practice.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation in electronic and paper medical records.
- Assist physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and Registered Nurses during examinations and medical procedures.
- Reinforce health education related to medications, chronic disease management, hygiene, and preventive healthcare.
- Monitor medication effectiveness, adverse reactions, and treatment outcomes.
- Participate in infection prevention initiatives and maintain a clean, safe clinical environment.
- Comply with correctional security procedures while providing therapeutic nursing care.
- Participate in mandatory training, quality improvement activities, and regulatory inspections.
- Maintain professional communication with healthcare providers, correctional officers, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure continuity of care.
Qualifications
- Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
- Graduation from an approved practical nursing program.
- Current CPR/BLS certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
- Knowledge of nursing principles, medication administration, emergency response, and infection prevention.
- Ability to function effectively in a secure correctional environment while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Strong assessment, communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Basic computer proficiency and experience with electronic medical records preferred.
Work Environment
- Secure correctional healthcare setting serving an adult inmate population.
- Frequent interaction with correctional officers, medical providers, and multidisciplinary healthcare staff.
- Rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call assignments may be required.
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and responding to medical emergencies.
- Adherence to institutional security procedures and personal safety protocols is required at all times.
