A Journeyman Electrician is a skilled field electrician who performs electrical installation and troubleshooting while continuing to develop code knowledge and advanced diagnostic skills. This role typically operates under direction from a Master Electrician or Project Manager and may lead a small crew of one apprentice or helper. Licensing may vary by individual and jurisdiction. When acting as a Journeyman, the role includes limited leadership and job coordination responsibilities while remaining hands-on in the field. This role includes all duties and responsibilities of an Apprentice Electrician.
Key responsibilities
· Supervision and Leadership: Lead, manage, and mentor a team of journeyman electricians, apprentices, and laborers, setting expectations and ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and productivity standards.
· Project planning, coordination and execution: Plan and coordinate all phases of electrical installations, maintenance, and repairs according to blueprints, schematics, specifications, and project timelines. This includes scheduling work and personnel, and coordinating with project managers and other trades to ensure seamless project integration.
· Safety management: Implement and enforce safety plans, conduct tool-box talks, and ensure all crew members follow safety protocols and use proper equipment.
· Quality control: Inspect work in progress and completed installations to ensure they meet company standards and project specifications.
· Material and equipment management: Ensure the correct materials, tools, and safety equipment are on-site when needed and manage material purchases.
· Communication: Communicate with project managers, customers, and other stakeholders about jobsite progress, issues, and changes.
· Technical skills: Perform hands-on installation, troubleshooting, and repair of various electrical systems, which may include commercial equipment, conduit, and motor controls.
· Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate daily reports, labor tracking logs, safety documentation, and "as-builts" (records of actual installed systems) to provide clear visibility to management and ensure accountability.
Qualifications and requirements
· A valid California State General Electrician License is highly recommended.
· A strong understanding of electrical theory, the National Electrical Code (NEC), and system design is required.
· Experience in commercial electrical work, with at least some years in a leadership role, is typically needed.
· Flexibility to travel and work across different shifts is often necessary.
· A valid driver's license with a clean record is often required, as travel to various job sites may be necessary.
· Knowledge of county, PG&E, TID codes for proper install
Other duties
· Track labor and stay on schedule and on budget.
· Document daily progress and project changes.
· Conduct performance evaluations for crew members.
· May involve working in confined spaces or from ladders and man lifts.
