Overview
We are seeking an experienced Traveling Superintendent to oversee multiple electrical substation construction projects across various locations. This role is responsible for managing day-to-day field operations, coordinating subcontractors and crews, maintaining project schedules, enforcing safety standards, and ensuring high-quality project execution.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in utility, transmission & distribution (T&D), or electrical infrastructure construction and be comfortable traveling extensively to support multiple active project sites.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily field operations for multiple electrical substation construction projects
- Travel between project sites to support field execution, scheduling, manpower coordination, and client relations
- Manage and coordinate field crews, subcontractors, vendors, and equipment resources
- Ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and utility standards
- Maintain and enforce OSHA safety requirements and company safety policies
- Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Clients, and Utility Representatives
- Lead site meetings, toolbox talks, and safety briefings
- Review construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and work plans
- Monitor project progress, manpower productivity, and material deliveries
- Identify and resolve field issues, delays, and constructability concerns
- Support outage coordination and energized work planning when applicable
- Ensure quality control standards are maintained throughout project execution
- Maintain accurate field reports, daily logs, production tracking, and project documentation
- Assist with project scheduling and sequencing activities
- Oversee installation activities including:
- Foundations
- Grounding systems
- Conduit and duct banks
- Structural steel
- Bus work
- Switchgear
- Breakers
- Transformers
- Control houses
- Protection & control equipment
- Coordinate inspections, testing, punch lists, and project closeout activities
- Mentor Foremen and field leadership personnel
Qualifications
- 7+ years of electrical construction experience required
- 3+ years of superintendent or field leadership experience preferred
- Experience with electrical substations, utility infrastructure, or T&D construction strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of:
- Medium- and high-voltage electrical systems
- Utility construction practices
- Outage coordination
- Civil and electrical installation sequencing
- Safety protocols in energized environments
- Ability to read and interpret:
- One-line diagrams
- IFC drawings
- Electrical plans
- Civil drawings
- Specifications
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple active projects simultaneously
- Proficiency with project documentation, scheduling, and reporting
- Valid driver’s license required
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively for project assignments
Preferred Qualifications
- Utility or EPC contractor experience
- Experience overseeing projects ranging from distribution substations through transmission substations
- OSHA 30 certification preferred
- NCCER or electrical trade background preferred
- Experience managing subcontractors and self-perform crews
- Knowledge of commissioning and startup activities is a plus
Travel Requirements
- Frequent travel required based on active project locations
- Travel may include regional or nationwide assignments
- Extended stays at project sites may be required depending on project needs
