Job Summary:
The Sterile Processing Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization processes for all surgical instrumentation, reusable equipment, and supplies used throughout the hospital. This role oversees the operation and maintenance of washers and sterilizers, maintains complete and accurate documentation of every cycle, and ensures that clean, sterile, and properly functioning instruments are always available for patient care. The instruments, equipment, and processes this person manages are the backbone of safe surgical and procedural care for every patient in the building.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive soiled instruments into the decontamination area and promptly process them; clean each item according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Inspect instruments for damage and defects, lubricate items as required, and determine that each item is in good working condition before it re-enters circulation.
- Sort and arrange items into proper packs, wrap packs and individual items according to policy and procedure, and accurately label each item with name and expiration date.
- Work in both soiled and clean utility areas using proper personal protective equipment as directed in the policy and procedure manual.
- Correctly operate sterilizers, the ultrasonic washer, and other processing equipment; position items correctly in the sterilizer and select the proper cycle.
- Check indicators for proper functioning and perform required biological and chemical monitoring tests on all sterilizers; clean sterilizers according to established policies and procedures.
- Ensure proper preventative maintenance is performed on all equipment; maintain manufacturer guidelines on site and stay current on manufacturer recommendations for operation, cleaning, and maintenance.
- Interact with maintenance personnel as needed to ensure timely service if any equipment is taken out of service.
- Adhere to all sterilization process policies and procedures; maintain accurate, complete logs of all sterilization, biological, and decontamination processes.
- Maintain availability of supplies needed to keep documentation continuous throughout the sterilization process.
- Check wrapped sterilized items for outdated status and package integrity, and replace items as necessary.
- Maintain and update the hospital's instrument inventory list.
- Conduct quality controls of sterilization equipment, including but not limited to autoclaves, the anprolene gas sterilizer, and the ultrasonic cleaner.
- Maintain a clean and orderly central work area, including shelves, counters, and equipment.
- Maintain inventory levels and accurate records; place items in their correct locations, stock the storeroom with supplies as needed, rotate stock, check dates, and ensure supplies are properly stored.
- Assist in picking cases for the day when needed.
Required Skills/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Working knowledge of sterilization equipment, decontamination protocols, and infection control practices
- Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, 24/7 specialty and emergency environment
- Strong communicator who works well with surgeons, nursing staff, and hospital leadership
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, and kneel for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity to handle animals and medical equipment safely.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with exposure to potentially hazardous materials and situations.
- Visual acuity to read and interpret medical records and monitor patient conditions.
Compensation for this position is determined based on experience and ability to perform specific tasks outlined within our defined leveling categories.
