This position is responsible for performing routine servicing, preventive maintenance and repairs on city vehicles and equipment. Also gives assistance to the Mechanic as needed during major repairs on vehicles and equipment.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Performs routine servicing and preventive maintenance on city vehicles and equipment; changes oil and transmission fluid; replaces fuel filters, air filters, and hoses; inspects and services brakes, tires, and suspension.
- Performs corrective maintenance procedures, such as repairing or replacing door hinges, window tracks, window motors, batteries, alternators, starters, brakes, brake drums, rotors, and disc brakes.
- Fixes, changes, rotates, and balances tires on small cars and trucks, as well as tires on heavy equipment.
- Creates work orders on the computers; maintains records of the mileage for all city vehicles, maintains records of completed work on all equipment, and makes appointments for servicing cars, trucks and equipment from all city departments.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the shop, maintains assigned tools keeps them put up when not in use and helps maintain the inventory of parts and fluids.
- Repairs small engine equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of diagnostic and repair techniques.
- Knowledge of the operations of diesel and gas engines.
- Knowledge of hydraulics, air systems, electrical systems and A/C systems.
- Knowledge of safety techniques.
- Knowledge of mechanical principles.
- Skill in effectively communicating verbally with supervisors, co-workers, vendors and the general public.
- Skill in reading and comprehending written instructions, manuals, and directions.
- Ability to operate computer software to produce invoices, maintain inventory records, and to schedule preventive maintenance.
• Possess a valid Alabama driver’s license. • Basic skills that are typically associated with a high school education. • Two to Three years’ experience in the automotive preventive maintenance field is preferred. • Ability to work overtime and weekends if needed.
