Design Engineer (PE) – Civil Engineering

The Walker Associates, Engineers-Planners-Designers, PLLC is seeking a motivated and experienced Design Engineer (PE) to join our growing Civil Engineering team in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of municipal, transportation, utility, site development, geotechnical, and industrial projects while taking a leadership role in project design, Autodesk Civil 3D production, construction administration, and client coordination.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, design, and delivery of civil engineering projects from concept through construction. A primary focus of this position is the development and oversight of engineering plans and models using Autodesk Civil 3D, including grading, drainage, utility, roadway, and site design.
This role provides opportunities to mentor junior staff, manage project tasks, interact with clients, and contribute to a wide variety of infrastructure projects throughout Mississippi.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Mississippi or ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity
- Four (4) or more years of related civil engineering experience
- Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines
Preferred
- Previous consulting engineering experience
- Experience with transportation, municipal, utility, or site development projects
- Experience with State Aid, county, municipal, or MDOT projects
- Familiarity with bridge inspection procedures and reporting
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
Responsibilities
Civil 3D Design and Project Development
- Prepare engineering plans and construction documents using Autodesk Civil 3D
- Develop and manage alignments, profiles, surfaces, grading models, corridors, and pipe networks
- Perform site grading, storm drainage, utility, roadway, and site development design
- Prepare construction details, quantity estimates, and supporting design documentation
- Coordinate project deliverables with engineers, designers, surveyors, and drafters
Engineering Design
- Perform engineering calculations, analyses, and design for public and private infrastructure projects
- Design and support projects including:
- Water supply production wells
- Water distribution systems
- Water treatment facilities
- Elevated water storage tanks
- Sanitary sewer collection systems
- Commercial site developments
- Stormwater management systems
- Industrial facilities
- State Aid roadway reconstruction and enhancement projects
- State Aid bridge replacement projects
Construction Administration and Field Services
- Assist with construction administration, observation, and documentation
- Coordinate with contractors, owners, and regulatory agencies during construction
- Monitor project progress and prepare field reports
- Review shop drawings, RFIs, change orders, and contractor submittals
- Support bridge inspection activities and preparation of inspection reports
- Document field conditions and verify compliance with project plans and specifications
Professional Responsibilities
- Review engineering drawings, reports, and technical documents
- Prepare technical memoranda, reports, and project correspondence
- Communicate effectively with clients, regulatory agencies, contractors, and project team members
- Exercise sound engineering judgment and independent decision-making
- Contribute to a collaborative team environment while maintaining accountability for assigned projects
