Position Summary
The Surgical Medical Assistant & Patient Care Coordinator serves a dual role, providing both clinical and administrative support to our dermatology providers. This individual will assist with dermatologic surgical procedures, coordinate patient care before and after treatment, manage surgical scheduling, and ensure a seamless patient experience throughout their care journey. Similar roles in leading dermatology and surgical practices combine hands-on clinical support with surgery coordination, and patient education.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Medical Assistant Duties
- Room patients and obtain medical histories, medications, allergies, and chief complaints.
- Prepare examination and procedure rooms, ensuring proper sterilization and stocking of supplies.
- Assist physicians during Mohs micrographic surgery, excision procedures, biopsies, skin cancer treatments, and other dermatologic surgical procedures.
- Set up sterile fields, prepare surgical instruments and supplies, and maintain aseptic technique throughout procedures.
- Assist with local anesthesia administration, tissue handling, specimen labeling, and pathology preparation according to practice protocols.
- Perform wound care, dressing changes, suture removal, bandage application, and post-operative patient education.
- Monitor and support patients before, during, and after surgical procedures to ensure comfort and safety.
- Document procedures, surgical details, and patient communications accurately within the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Process prescription refills, laboratory requests, and pathology tracking as needed.
- Maintain strict infection-control, OSHA, and patient-safety standards.
- Support efficient patient flow in a fast-paced medical and surgical dermatology environment.
Patient Care Coordination & Surgery Scheduling
- Serve as a primary point of contact for surgical patients throughout their treatment journey.
- Coordinate surgical procedures, including scheduling consultations, surgeries, and post-operative appointments.
- Educate patients, under the direction of providers, regarding skin cancer diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, wound care, and expected outcomes.
- Coordinate medical clearances, laboratory testing, and pre-operative documentation.
- Manage referrals and communicate with outside providers as necessary.
- Conduct pre- and post-operative patient follow-up calls.
- Ensure all required consents and documentation are completed accurately and on time.
Qualifications
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
- Minimum 1–2 years of medical assistant experience
- Strong understanding of sterile technique and surgical assisting.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and follow-through.
- Experience with EMR systems and medical documentation.
- Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous dermatology or Mohs surgery experience.
- Experience with surgery scheduling and insurance authorization processes.
- Knowledge of dermatology procedures, pathology workflows, and wound care.
