What if you could spend part of the project behind the drawings and part of it in the actual substation?
You’ll review existing physical design packages, figure out where the documentation doesn’t match reality, then get into the field every 4–6 weeks to see the equipment, conduit, grounding, structures, and layouts for yourself. This is brownfield utility work where your engineering judgment matters.
You’ll spend your time reviewing and validating the physical side of operating substations:
- Review general arrangements, equipment layouts, grounding plans, raceways, conduit, cable routing, foundations, and structural drawings.
- Compare engineering packages against expected field conditions and flag discrepancies before they become design problems.
- Prepare for site walkdowns with the engineering team, knowing exactly what needs to be verified.
- Travel to operating substations throughout Northern and Central California and document what’s actually installed.
- Capture field conditions through measurements, photos, notes, markups, and redlines.
- Turn what you find in the field into engineering corrections and better design packages.
- Coordinate your findings with the team supporting future modifications and utility capital projects.
What you get: $75–$85/hour, with approved travel expenses reimbursed at cost. The back-office portion can be remote, with California office locations available if preferred. You’ll work roughly 4–6 weeks on engineering review and documentation, followed by about a week of field investigation, then repeat the cycle through the project.
You’ll fit this well if you’ve spent at least five years in utility substation physical design and know the difference between simply reading a drawing and knowing what you should expect to find in the yard. You’re comfortable with T&D substations, brownfield modifications, AIS/GIS layouts, grounding, raceways, conduit, and equipment arrangements—and you’re the kind of engineer who notices when the drawing and the field tell two different stories.
Curious what the site work looks like and where the travel takes you? Reach out. I’ll give you the details before you decide whether it’s worth a conversation.
