Gem State Staffing in Pocatello is hiring a Ditch Rider / Maintenance Worker for a full-time, year-round position supporting a critical irrigation canal system in the Aberdeen area. This role operates during irrigation season and transitions into full maintenance work during the off-season.
This is a great opportunity for candidates with agriculture, farming, construction, irrigation, or equipment operation experience.
JOB SUMMARY
The Ditch Rider is responsible for the delivery, regulation, and monitoring of irrigation water to water users during the irrigation season. After the season, the role transitions into canal, ditch, and irrigation system maintenance working under the O&M Manager.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
· Drive company vehicle along assigned canal route daily (“ride”) during irrigation season
· Deliver and regulate irrigation water according to water orders
· Inspect canals and ditches for leaks, breaks, spills, and obstructions
· Perform canal maintenance including cleaning, weed control, burning, and rodent control
· Repair and maintain irrigation systems, headgates, pumps, and waterways
· Communicate with water users regarding water delivery and issues
· Maintain accurate records of water use, complaints, and maintenance needs
· Secure headgates and report maintenance needs for off-season repair
· Assist with heavy equipment operation, hauling materials, and general labor during non-irrigation season
· Support canal repairs, installations, and infrastructure maintenance as needed
REQUIREMENTS
· Valid driver’s license required
· Ability to operate equipment, tools, and company vehicles
· Ability to use smartphone/tablet for reporting and communication
· Must be able to create hotspot connection for field reporting
· Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, fractions)
· Ability to read tape measures accurately (¼” increments or smaller)
· Ability to use irrigation discharge tables for water flow calculations
· Strong communication skills with customers, coworkers, and the public
· Must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
· Farming or agricultural irrigation experience
· Construction, maintenance, or equipment operation background
· Experience with canals, ditches, or water distribution systems
· Mechanical, engineering, or field technician experience
· Carpentry, concrete, or general labor background
SCHEDULE & PAY DETAILS
· Monday through Friday schedule
· Overtime is required during peak season
· Due to agriculture exemption, all hours are paid at straight time (no overtime rate paid)
· Full-time, year-round employment
