Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating excavators bulldozers and other assigned construction equipment. This position requires previous equipment-operating experience and a strong understanding of excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, and jobsite safety.
Operators are expected to complete work accurately according to project plans, grades, elevations, and supervisor instructions while protecting equipment, underground utilities, surrounding property, and other employees.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate excavators and other assigned heavy equipment.
- Perform excavation, trenching, grading, digging, backfilling, and material-moving work.
- Cut and maintain proper grades and elevations.
- Excavate around existing utilities and other jobsite obstacles safely.
- Load dump trucks efficiently without damaging trucks or equipment.
- Perform daily pre-operation and post-operation equipment inspections.
- Check fluids, grease equipment, clean tracks, and complete routine operator maintenance.
- Immediately report leaks, mechanical problems, damage, or unsafe equipment conditions.
- Communicate with supervisors, laborers, truck drivers, and other operators.
- Follow all company policies, OSHA standards, and jobsite safety requirements.
- Help out on any task when equipment operation is not required.
Qualifications
- Previous experience operating excavators is required.
- Experience in grading, excavation, utilities, earthwork
- Ability to safely dig trenches and work around underground utilities.
- Ability to understand grades, elevations, stakes, and basic construction plans.
- Ability to perform daily equipment inspections and basic operator maintenance.
- Strong awareness of jobsite hazards and surrounding personnel.
- Ability to work independently while following instructions.
- Reliable attendance and dependable transportation are required.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is preferred.
- Must be willing to work outdoors and travel to local jobsites.
- Must be available for overtime when required.
Compensation and Schedule
- Pay range: $18.00–$23 per hour to start
- Pay is based on the position, experience, qualifications, and demonstrated ability.
- Employees are paid weekly.
- Standard schedule is Monday through Friday.
- Overtime may be available or required depending on project needs.
- This is a full-time, in-person position.
