JOB SUMMARY:
Primary duties include phlebotomy, preparation of patient specimens, clerical duties and equipment maintenance.. Demonstrate proficiency in QC and QA policies and procedures. Good attendance, technical knowledge and understanding necessary for problem solving and troubleshooting are required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Essential Functions may vary by department and/or by location.
1. Perform phlebotomy and other collection procedures appropriately and according to established procedures:
-Order of draw.
- Venipuncture
-Instruct patients in the proper collection of urines, stools, sputum's, and timed glucose collections as appropriate.
2. Process requisitions and accurately enter all information into the computer. Contact clients to obtain missing information on requisition as needed or directed.
3. Perform inquiry functions, specimen transport verification, retrieve and print collection labels.
4. Perform basic clerical functions including:
-Advance Beneficiary Notice.
-Standing Orders.
-Collect appropriate billing/insurance information.
-Greet patients, answer phones, and handle inquiries in a courteous and professional manner.
5. Prepare, process and/or store specimens as appropriate. Centrifuging, splitting, aliquoting. Measuring and stabilizing. Ensure that information on the requisition matches the labels and that test ordered are in compliance with the client’s requests. Insure that each test requested is allocated to the proper department, inside or outside of the lab.
6. Identify technical specimen problems and actively participate in problem solving. Refer to appropriate individuals for resolution in the absence of established guidelines.
7. Perform specialized procedures.
8.Be willing to float to different locations or sections if required by the department.
9. Maintain a clean and safe work environment . Follow procedures to ensure safe handling of specimens, chemicals, and laboratory equipment..
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Meet all relevant checklists and/or special requirements of the department or location. (These requirements vary by location or department.
2. Have acceptable attendance/tardiness records to meet company and division standards.
3. Participate in continuing education programs.
4. Demonstrate effective telephone and verbal communication skills and professional judgement when dealing with clients, patients and co-workers.
5. Basic P.C. skills.
6. Good analytical skills
7. Valid driver's license. Good driving record. Must be insurable by lab insurance carrier if required by location.
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
H.S. diploma or equivalent. Meet one of the following:
- Phlebotomy Certification (Preferred)
- One (1) year experience as a certified Phlebotomist
Two (2) years directly relevant experience elsewhere
