JOB SUMMARY
The Phlebotomist will assist Laboratory Technologists in duties necessary for collecting and processing specimens within the laboratory.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Performs phlebotomy duties as needed.
- Communicate effectively with patients. Verbally receiving patient name and DOB.
- Properly clean venipuncture site.
- Collect specimens in correct order of draw and ensure correct specimen is collected for test ordered.
- Ensure all specimens are labeled correctly with patient name, DOB, visit number, time, date, and initials of collector prior to patient leaving phlebotomy area.
- Delivering all specimens in a timely manner to the laboratory.
- Process and accession specimens delivered to the Laboratory.
2) Ensure all specimens are in the appropriate container, collected properly, specimen container is not expired, and labeled correctly.
- Ensure that all specimens have the required information for processing (meeting all regulatory guidelines).
- Centrifuge specimens timely to maintain specimen integrity.
- Follow OSHA guidelines when processing and accessioning specimens.
3) Verify orders and test requisitions for validity, notifies lab tech of any concerns.
- Transcribe orders to the LIS system.
- Performs quick registration as needed.
- Verifies specimens/orders in the LIS, entering the appropriate initials, dates and times.
- Dispatch/deliver specimens to the appropriate testing area according to priority.
- Ensure all necessary specimens are sent to the reference laboratory along with the appropriate paperwork.
- Enter necessary data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to admit patients, order tests, add comments, etc.
- Knowledge and proper use of the Hospital Information System (HIS).
- Knowledge and proper usage of the on-line Reference Inquiry Directory and guidelines.
4) Knowledge of preparing and sending specimen manifest via reference system. (LabCorp)
- Knowledge of all reference laboratory requisitions.
- Order and stock necessary supplies.
- Maintain appropriate logs and required records.
- Answer phones, take messages, send faxes, as required.
- Perform all duties, including manual testing.
- Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
5) Ensure that the Laboratory Manager and/or Diagnostic Services Director are informed and kept abreast of all needs and concerns.
- Assist on special projects as needed by the Laboratory Manager.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Follows Hood Memorial Hospitals Compliance Programs and Federal and State Regulatory guidelines.
- Performs all duties in a safe manner and follows Hood Memorial Hospitals safety policies and procedures.

1. Maintain professional behavior in stressful situations.
2. Participate in unit meetings and in-service education as required by hospital policy.
3. Attendance at various committee meetings as required.

2. Specialized or Technical Education Required:
High School diploma and certificate from an approved phlebotomy training program.
