Job Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced, well-rounded Construction Manager to lead our Production Department. This is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing multiple Project Managers, Field Supervisors, subcontractors, and active construction projects.
The ideal candidate will combine executive-level construction management ability with strong, practical field knowledge. This person must understand construction from the ground up and be equally comfortable reviewing project performance, directing a Project Manager, resolving a field problem, developing a rough estimate, or explaining the work to a subcontractor who needs hands-on direction.
We are looking for a proven leader who can manage multiple priorities, hold teams accountable, anticipate problems, and keep projects moving safely, efficiently, and profitably. Strong knowledge of the McAllen and Rio Grande Valley construction market is important, including established relationships with dependable local subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, and potential clients.
Primary Responsibilities
- Direct the company’s overall production operations across multiple commercial and residential construction projects.
- Lead, supervise, mentor, and hold accountable Project Managers, Assistant Project Managers, Field Supervisors, and other production personnel.
- Assign projects and responsibilities based on workload, experience, project complexity, and company priorities.
- Establish clear expectations for project planning, field execution, documentation, communication, quality, safety, scheduling, and cost control.
- Oversee projects from preconstruction and estimating through mobilization, construction, closeout, and warranty completion.
- Review project budgets, schedules, subcontracts, purchase commitments, change orders, cost reports, RFIs, submittals, and project forecasts.
- Monitor multiple projects simultaneously and identify potential schedule, cost, quality, manpower, subcontractor, or client issues before they become serious problems.
- Conduct regular production meetings with Project Managers and Field Supervisors to review progress, upcoming work, constraints, costs, staffing, and corrective actions.
- Perform site visits and inspections to verify construction progress, quality, safety, productivity, manpower, and compliance with project requirements.
- Coordinate effectively with owners, architects, engineers, inspectors, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal accounting and administrative personnel.
- Interpret plans, specifications, scopes of work, contracts, shop drawings, sketches, schematics, and other construction documents.
- Develop practical solutions when plans are incomplete, unclear, unavailable, or do not match actual field conditions.
- Take field measurements and accurately calculate area, square footage, linear footage, quantities, elevations, and material requirements.
- Create basic field layouts, sketches, takeoffs, and work instructions from manual drawings, measurements, photographs, or existing conditions when complete plans are unavailable.
- Provide clear, hands-on direction to subcontractors and field personnel, including individuals who may have limited ability to read plans or technical specifications.
- Prepare conceptual budgets, quantity takeoffs, and rough estimates for service work, repairs, renovations, and smaller construction projects.
- Assist estimators and project teams with scope development, constructability reviews, subcontractor coverage, pricing, scheduling, and project handoff.
- Review subcontractor proposals to identify exclusions, gaps, overlaps, incorrect quantities, and potential scope disputes.
- Support subcontractor and vendor negotiations while maintaining strong and professional working relationships.
- Build and maintain a reliable network of local subcontractors, tradespeople, suppliers, vendors, consultants, and other construction professionals.
- Help identify qualified subcontractors and vendors who can improve the company’s pricing, capacity, quality, and project performance.
- Leverage established community and industry relationships to support business development and introduce prospective clients or project opportunities when appropriate.
- Maintain professional relationships with existing clients and help strengthen repeat-business opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, contracts, building codes, permit requirements, OSHA standards, and jobsite safety procedures.
- Enforce quality-control standards and ensure that deficient or incomplete work is promptly corrected.
- Participate in hiring, evaluating, training, coaching, disciplining, and developing production personnel.
- Prepare and present accurate reports concerning project status, schedules, budgets, risks, manpower, subcontractor performance, and anticipated completion dates.
- Work closely with executive management to improve production systems, accountability, profitability, and overall company performance.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible construction management experience.
- Significant experience managing multiple commercial, residential, renovation, or heavy construction projects.
- Proven experience directly supervising Project Managers, Field Supervisors, Superintendents, and subcontractors.
- Strong working knowledge of construction methods, sequencing, materials, equipment, labor productivity, cost control, scheduling, and field operations.
- Demonstrated ability to understand construction at both the detailed field level and the senior management level.
- Advanced ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, schematics, shop drawings, contracts, scopes of work, and technical documents.
- Ability to develop quantities, square footage, area calculations, material requirements, field layouts, and rough estimates from plans, sketches, field measurements, or incomplete information.
- Ability to provide practical field direction and communicate construction requirements clearly to subcontractors and workers with varying levels of technical knowledge.
- Demonstrated ability to manage several projects, teams, deadlines, and competing priorities simultaneously.
- Strong leadership, judgment, organization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to establish accountability, resolve conflicts, and make timely decisions under pressure.
- Strong knowledge of project budgets, cost-to-complete forecasting, schedules, procurement, change management, and contract administration.
- Established knowledge of the McAllen and Rio Grande Valley construction market.
- Strong existing relationships with local subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, and industry professionals are highly preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and general construction-management technology.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to projects throughout the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding areas.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with commercial general contracting, civil construction, renovations, ground-up construction, or high-value complex projects.
- Experience developing and managing project schedules using Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or comparable scheduling software.
- Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, HeavyBid, Civil 3D, QuickBooks Desktop Contractor Edition, or comparable construction and accounting platforms.
- OSHA 30 certification or equivalent construction safety training.
- PMP, CCM, LEED, or other relevant construction-management certification.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, business, or a related field. Extensive qualifying construction experience may be considered in place of a degree.
