About the Role:
Our neurosurgery team is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) with RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) certification to join our practice in a hybrid clinical role. This position splits time between the Operating Room assisting neurosurgeons directly during surgical procedures, and the outpatient office, managing patient care from initial consultation through post-operative follow-up. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled advanced practice provider who thrives in both high-acuity surgical settings and continuity-of-care clinical environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as first assist to neurosurgeons during spinal and cranial procedures
- Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping
- Provide intraoperative assistance including tissue handling, hemostasis, retraction, wound closure, and suturing
- Ensure adherence to sterile technique and surgical safety protocols
- Coordinate with OR staff and anesthesia teams to support efficient case flow
- Conduct new patient consultations, history and physical exams, and pre-operative evaluations
- Manage post-operative follow-up visits, wound checks, and suture/staple removal
- Order and interpret diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT, X-ray) relevant to neurosurgical conditions
- Develop and adjust treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising neurosurgeon(s)
- Prescribe medications and manage pain control regimens as appropriate to license and state scope of practice
- Educate patients and families on diagnoses, procedures, and recovery expectations
- Maintain thorough, accurate, and timely documentation in the EMR
Required:
- Active, unrestricted license as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) in NJ
- RNFA certification** (current and in good standing)
- Board certification (NCCPA for PAs; ANCC/AANP for NPs)
- Current BLS/ACLS certification
- Prior experience in Neurosurgery, Orthopedic surgery, or a related surgical specialty strongly preferred
- Demonstrated first-assist experience in the OR
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to work independently under physician supervision/collaboration agreement
- 2+ years of experience as a surgical first assist
- Experience with spine and/or cranial neurosurgical procedures
- Familiarity with neurosurgical EMR and imaging systems
- Starting salary: $150,000+, commensurate with experience
