The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) currently has an opening for a Buildings/Grounds Supervisor to serve as part of the team at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery (NVWMC) in Spooner, WI.

Nestled in the Northwoods, the NWVMC is located along Highway 53 between Eau Claire and Superior. The Cemetery serves as a peaceful final resting place for eligible veterans, spouses, and dependents.

Position Summary

This position is responsible the supervision of the grounds crew at the NWVMC and other cemetery operations which include grounds maintenance, interment operations, cemetery recordkeeping, and facilities and equipment maintenance, repairs, and improvements.

This position directly supervises the cemetery's permanent and limited term grounds crew employees in meeting the compliance initiatives of the National Cemetery Administration Shrine Operational Standards and Measures. This position must exercise initiative, independent judgement, and ensure work is performed in a timely manner with frequent reviews and adjustments for changes in priority. This position has daily contact with families, funeral directors, contractors, and other state agencies that require tactful and professional communication and interaction.

Salary Information

The starting salary for this position is between $35.20 - $37.20 an hour ($73,216 - $77,376 annually). The Buildings/Grounds Supervisor classification is in pay schedule and range 81-04.

Salaries are dependent on candidate qualifications. Compensation for current State employees may vary and will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

The incumbent must meet the requirements to operate a State of Wisconsin Fleet vehicle.

Due to the nature of this position’s duties, the work of this position will be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.

The incumbent of this position must obtain a WI Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), Commercial Pesticide Applicator license within 12 months of employment.

Due to the nature of this position’s duties, candidates will be subject to a criminal background check prior to appointment.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of application. WDVA does not sponsor work or student visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.

A twelve-month probationary period will be required.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have experience as a lead worker (e.g., training staff, coaching/mentoring, providing feedback, setting goals and plans, reviewing work for accuracy and completion, evaluating performance, assigning work, etc.) or as a formal supervisor (e.g., hiring, evaluating performance, discipline, etc.)

Well qualified applicants will also have experience performing all-season facilities and grounds maintenance (e.g., snow and ice removal, mowing and trimming, basic equipment and facility repairs and maintenance, observing safety standards, etc.).
