Focus: Engineering – Health Physics
Role Description: Interested in a career in the sciences? Register for the opportunity to explore nuclear science with Mr. Kranbuhl, where you will gain hands-on experience doing a project at your own pace with support from Mr. Kranbuhl along the way. Mr. Kranbuhl is a St X alum and a health physics engineer for the CDC who specializes in military nuclear power to nuclear medicine and everything in between. You'll start off by meeting with Mr. Kranbuhl to gain a basic understanding of nuclear engineering topics, the work on a simple project for a couple hours over several weeks, such as this cloud chamber project. If you like the results of your first project, can can decide to do another that deepens your knowledge and experience. If you are a Boy Scout, these projects can be certified by Mr. Kranbuhl to earn the Nuclear Science Merit Badge! Whether you do one project or more, the hope is that you have fun while being challenged and be able to update your resume with a nuclear engineering experience and be prepared for college and/or co-op interviews where you can articulate how this project experience better positions you against other candidates.
Type of Student Desired: Basic understanding of Algebra, interest in engineering.
Compensation: Not applicable for any externship
Estimated Hours Required: Total of 2-3 hours for the first and subsequent projects and can be done over a 1-3 week period.
