Role Overview
We are seeking an accomplished Director of Enterprise Risk Management to lead all EHS and risk management functions across the Axvor portfolio. Reporting directly to the COO, this role is essential to protecting our 4,000+ employees, mitigating enterprise risk, managing workers compensation costs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting our operational and safety objectives. This is a high-impact position with direct influence on safety culture and risk strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Workers Compensation Management
- Oversee workers compensation programs across all operating companies; develop strategy to reduce claims frequency and severity while maintaining competitive employee benefits
- Partner with insurance brokers, carriers, and third-party administrators to optimize coverage and manage claims; negotiate rates and terms to achieve cost savings
- Implement return-to-work programs, transitional duty assignments, and vocational rehabilitation initiatives to reduce indemnity and medical costs
- Analyze workers comp data to identify high-risk roles, locations, and patterns; drive targeted safety improvements
- Ensure compliance with state workers compensation laws and reporting requirements across multi-state operations
Safety Management & Occupational Health
- Develop and maintain comprehensive safety programs aligned with OSHA standards, DOT regulations, and industry best practices
- Lead incident investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation; track leading and lagging safety metrics across all sites
- Establish safety training curriculum; oversee compliance with hazard communication, personal protective equipment, and job safety analysis requirements
- Conduct facility audits and inspections; identify hazards and ensure timely remediation
- Build and maintain strong safety culture; engage frontline employees, supervisors, and management in safety initiatives
- Prepare for and manage OSHA inspections, investigations, and citations; coordinate with legal counsel on regulatory matters
Environmental Systems & Compliance
- Develop and implement environmental management systems covering air quality, hazardous waste disposal, spill prevention, and stormwater management
- Ensure compliance with EPA, state environmental agencies, and local regulations across fleet operations, facilities, and distribution centers
- Manage environmental permits, manifests, and reporting; conduct environmental audits and assessments
- Lead sustainability initiatives aligned with corporate objectives and customer expectations
Enterprise Risk Management
- Identify, assess, and mitigate operational, regulatory, and liability risks across portfolio companies
- Manage insurance programs including general liability, property, cyber, and specialty coverage; coordinate with risk management consultants and brokers
- Develop crisis response and business continuity plans; coordinate with operations and legal teams on high-risk situations
- Monitor industry trends, emerging regulations, and best practices; benchmark Axvor's performance against competitors and industry leaders
Organizational & Governance
- Build and lead a high-performing ERM and risk management team; provide training and development opportunities
- Report safety and risk metrics to executive leadership and board; ensure transparency on material risks
- Collaborate with HR, Operations, Finance, and Legal on integrated risk and compliance strategy
Required Qualifications
- 12+ years of progressive EHS, risk management, or related experience, with significant hands-on responsibility for safety and workers compensation programs
- Deep expertise in workers compensation management, claims administration, and cost containment strategies
- Strong background in OSHA compliance, occupational safety management, and incident investigation
- Demonstrated knowledge of environmental regulations (EPA, state/local) and environmental management systems
- Experience in transportation, logistics, manufacturing, or staffing sectors strongly preferred
- Professional certifications (CSP, ASP, CIH, or OHST preferred; CSP highly valued)
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive organizational change
- Executive presence and ability to communicate complex risk concepts to non-EHS stakeholders
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; proficiency with data analysis and safety management software
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing multi-site, multi-state EHS and risk operations
- Background in fleet safety management or transportation/logistics industry
- Prior director-level or VP-level role at a mid-market or enterprise company
- Experience with workers compensation rate management and insurance renewals
- Knowledge of private equity portfolio management and holding company operations
