Overview
The Code Enforcement Officer is responsible for investigating and resolving complaints related to Township ordinances, zoning regulations, property maintenance, and nuisance violations. This position supports the Township’s goal of maintaining health, safety, and community standards through a complaint‑driven, fair, and consistent enforcement process. The Officer works independently, communicates regularly with the Township Supervisor and Board, and provides clear documentation of all enforcement actions.
Responsibilities
- Receive, log, and investigate resident complaints regarding potential ordinance or property maintenance violations.
- Conduct on‑site inspections as needed to verify the nature and extent of reported violations.
- Document findings through written reports, photographs, and case files.
- Issue warning notices, violation letters, and follow‑up correspondence in accordance with Township ordinances and established procedures.
- Educate property owners and residents on ordinance requirements and options for achieving compliance.
- Coordinate with the Township Supervisor, legal counsel, and other agencies when enforcement escalates to citations or legal action.
- Maintain accurate records of all complaints, inspections, communications, and case outcomes.
- Prepare monthly or quarterly activity summaries for the Township Board.
- Attend Board meetings when requested to provide updates or answer questions.
- Represent the Township professionally and respectfully in all interactions with residents.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional coursework in public administration, law enforcement, planning, or related fields preferred.
- Experience in municipal code enforcement, zoning, inspections, law enforcement, or related work is desirable but not required.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply Township ordinances and zoning regulations.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain requirements clearly and calmly.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and handle multiple cases simultaneously.
- Basic computer proficiency, including email, recordkeeping systems, and report writing.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Must have no record of felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
Pay: $21.50 per hour
