My Tutor Anywhere is looking for an experienced special education teacher or tutor to work one-on-one with a 11-year-old student in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood between the hours of 9 am and 1 pm.
This student benefits from patient, encouraging instruction and needs support primarily in reading, writing, and math. We are looking for someone who can build a strong relationship with him, increase his academic confidence, and make learning engaging.
This is not traditional homework help or worksheet-based tutoring. The family is looking for someone who can provide structured academic instruction while incorporating the student's interests. For example, a reading and writing lesson might involve reading an interesting article or learning about a topic such as science, history, or Greek mythology, discussing it together, and completing a short writing activity based on the reading.
The student has ADHD, dyslexia/a learning disability, and has struggled with confidence and academic endurance. A successful tutor will know how to adjust the pace of instruction, provide appropriate encouragement, and gradually challenge the student without making sessions feel overwhelming.
Responsibilities
- Provide individualized, in-person instruction in reading, writing/literacy, and/or elementary math
- Plan engaging lessons appropriate for the student's academic level and interests
- Use a variety of activities and materials rather than relying primarily on worksheets
- Adjust instruction based on the student's performance, attention, and learning needs
- Help the student develop greater academic confidence and independence
- Communicate briefly with the family about progress and areas being addressed
Qualifications
- Teaching, special education, intervention, or substantial one-on-one tutoring experience
- Experience working with students with ADHD, dyslexia, learning disabilities, and/or IEPs strongly preferred
- Comfortable teaching upper-elementary reading, writing, and/or math
- Able to plan and deliver lessons independently
- Patient, flexible, encouraging, and able to build rapport with students who may be reluctant or discouraged learners
- Reliable transportation to the family's home in Lakeview
Pay: $60.00 per hour
