JOB SUMMARY: The Market Merchandiser is a dynamic, multi-functional role blending category management, merchandising, inventory control, event coordination, and social media management into a single high-impact position. This position is responsible for what we sell, how we present it, and how we tell our story to customers.
This role is ideal for a hands-on, food-passionate individual who thrives in a fast-moving independent retail environment and takes pride in a store that feels vibrant, curated, and locally connected to its community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
CATEGORY MANAGEMENT:
Direct and manage product assortment across all categories (food, fresh, specialty, snacks, beverages, health & beauty, seasonal) — curate offerings that reflect our store identity, local focus, and customer base; research current trends and customer feedback to continuously improve product assortment and achieve target sales and profits.
Identify, onboard, and maintain relationships with vendors including local producers, artisan makers, and specialty distributors; negotiate pricing, terms, delivery schedules, product placement and planograms.
Manage full product lifecycle: introduce new items, monitor performance, manage and alter planograms, pricing, set competitive margin-conscious pricing, and discontinue slow movers.
Comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws regarding food products, labeling, licensing and safety.
MERCHANDISING:
Build and maintain compelling, shoppable displays throughout the store — shelves, endcaps, coolers, and seasonal features — applying visual merchandising best practices including signage, product placement, and storytelling.
Coordinate and execute store resets and seasonal changeovers; monitor in-store presentation frequently to maintain cleanliness, in-stock conditions, and brand standards.
Develop and run promotions, in-store and loyalty campaigns; create and post supporting signage and materials.
Collaborate with store teams and vendors on layout improvements to optimize traffic flow and category adjacencies.
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT:
Set and manage par levels for all categories; generate purchase orders, coordinate vendor delivery timing, and receive/verify incoming shipments against POs — flagging and resolving discrepancies promptly.
Monitor inventory turnover, waste, and shrink; maintain FIFO practices and organized back-of-house storage; price, organize, and transport items as delivered.
Develop proficiency with inventory management systems and POS platforms. Prepare regular inventory reports for leadership tracking cost of goods, waste/loss patterns, and event-specific needs; conduct seasonal and annual physical counts.
Work with internal teams including Merchandising, Advertising, Public Relations, Food Service and Operations to maximize sales opportunities and ensure in-stock availability of general merchandise and local vendor items. Create strategies to sell through seasonal items, take advantage of trends and buying opportunities.
EVENTS & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
Conceive, plan, and execute in-store and community events: tastings, demos, pop-ups, workshops, and seasonal markets (e.g., farmer markets, cheese & wine pairings, holiday gift markets, cooking demos).
Source and coordinate vendors, local producers, and community partners for events and sampling opportunities; handle all logistics including scheduling, setup/teardown, staffing coordination, permits and follow-up.
Build and maintain a calendar of recurring and one-off events that drive foot traffic and community loyalty; track performance (attendance, sales lift, customer feedback) and apply learnings to future events.
Identify and pursue opportunities with catering, delivery and community opportunities within the area.
REPORTING AND PERFORMANCE:
Manage site point-of-sale, updating back office to feature new items, troubleshooting issues and updating pathing.
Ownership of the site’s P&L; adhering to budget, sales and profit goals. Proactively identify opportunities and concerns, actively utilizing data to improve the offer.
Prepare monthly summaries of category performance, inventory status, and event outcomes.
Track key metrics: sales by category, margin, inventory turnover, event ROI, and social media engagement.
- Ability to work occasional nights and weekends based on Market needs and event schedules. Typically 7-8 key events each year requiring off-hour presence.
- Schedule will be roughly 50% of time spent in the office and 50% of time spent onsite.
- Working relationship with site Manager with frequent collaboration and communication.
- Comply with all federal, state and local laws concerning products in assigned categories.
- Participate in special projects as assigned.
