The Utility Fitter is responsible for the safe and reliable operation, maintenance, and repair of a Level II water distribution system, Level II wastewater collection system, and provides initial response to natural gas emergencies. This role requires achieving and maintaining Level II certifications in water distribution and wastewater collection while performing preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on system components. The Utility Fitter operates specialized equipment including sewer jetting trucks, vacuum trucks, and other miscellaneous pipefitter tools, and conducts inspections and repairs in confined spaces under a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme cold and heat. The position also requires participation in on-call rotation and the ability to respond promptly to emergency callouts to ensure continuous system functionality and public safety.
This is an in-person position located at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Anchorage - Alaska.
Pay Rate: Union Scale.
What you will do
-
Install water services and sewer connections.
-
Maintenance of water mains and service laterals.
-
Maintenance of wastewater collection mains and service laterals to include flushing, thawing or unblocking when necessary.

Extend water mains or complete repairs to existing system.
-
Maintain pumps, motors, controls, valves and meters for various utility systems.
-
Conduct valve, hydrant and flushing operations as required by company policy.

Perform inspections of system components, relay results of the inspections to supervisors and recommend future project requirements.

Serve as a first responder for water and/or sewer outages, assess causes of outages and develop a response/repair course of action to reestablish utility services.

Perform the full range of tasks associated with the journeyman utility fitter.

Operate specialized equipment such as Vactor Truck, Jet Truck or Steam Thawing equipment.
Conditions of Employment
Must pass a pre-employment drug test, random drug test thereafter in accordance with the published policy of Doyon Utilities. Must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska. Must be eligible to work on a military installation in Alaska. Eligibility to work on a military installation includes compliance with Department of Defense mandates with respect to employee background and health directives.
Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent Required

4 years Experience working as an operator on a public water or wastewater system. Required or

5 years Experience as a journeyman pipefitter or plumber. Required or
-
Successful completion of an accredited plumber/pipefitter apprenticeship program. Required

Intermediate knowledge of the operation and maintenance of public water distribution systems and equipment, disinfection practices, and flow testing. (required proficiency)

Intermediate knowledge of the operation and maintenance of public wastewater gravity and forced main collection systems and their associated equipment, to include but not limited to lift stations and lift station controls. (required proficiency)

Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, and standards of construction. (preferred proficiency)

Ability to work independently and collaborate within a team. (required proficiency)

Ability to operate in a safe, and professional journeyman manner. (required proficiency)

Knowledge of computer maintenance systems (preferred proficiency)

Must be able to communicate effectively with other workers, supervisors and site management. (required proficiency)

Skills, knowledge, and ability to operate utility fitter tools, to include, but not limited tasks associated with to cutting, grinding, threading, soldering, grooving, pumping, thawing, jetting and snaking. (preferred proficiency)

Knowledge skills and ability to operate utility fitter support equipment to include but not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, forklifts, skid steers, jetter trucks, boom trucks, camera trucks, and plow trucks. (preferred proficiency)

Intermediate knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe work practices that apply to the operations and maintenance of DU’s utility systems (required proficiency)

ADEC Provisional certifications (WD and WWC). Within 1 year from date of hire. Required

ADEC Level I certifications (WD and WWC). Within 2 years from date of hire. Required

ADEC Level II certifications (WD and WWC). Within 4 years from date of hire. Required

Class B CDL License from the State of Alaska. within 1 Year Required
