Required Qualifications:

A master’s degree with two years of relevant professional experience or a BA/BS degree, plus four years of related professional experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in education, youth development, psychology, sociology, or related field, or BA/BS degree plus at least four years of relevant experience

Experience working with TRIO-like populations in an educational setting, such as low-income and first-generation high school students or consideration of personal experiences and/or overcoming barriers similar to those of TRIO students

Minimum of four years of experience hiring, training and supervising

Experience providing effective academic services to English Language Learners (ELL)

Demonstrated understanding of Minneapolis Public High School graduation requirements and Minnesota Academic Standards (K-12)

Demonstrated understanding of postsecondary preparation and intervention services for high-risk students

Ability to speak a foreign language – Spanish, Hmong or Somali
This position is responsible for evaluation and implementation of all TRIO Upward Bound (UB) academic services including academic year tutoring and classroom instruction (4 classes during the academic year) and all instruction during the summer program (10-14 total classes delivered daily). This position oversees high school student academic progress and develops holistic academic intervention strategies and services to positively influence the programs’ ability to meet federal program objectives and prepare students for academic rigors of postsecondary school.
The Academic Coordinator must stay abreast of best practices in curriculum development, tutoring, training, evaluation, behavior management, Minneapolis Public Schools graduation requirements and curriculum design and implementation changes/policies, youth development, educational best-practices and college readiness indicators. The Academic Coordinator interviews, hires, trains, supervises and monitors performance for 15-20 support staff each academic year and 15 instructional staff each summer.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000 annually. Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.
This position is primarily on campus four days a week, with one day remote.

Annually recruit, interview, hire and train approximately 30 part-time academic support staff (teachers, teaching assistants and tutors) and volunteers for academic year and summer services to implement developed curriculum and supports.

Provide ongoing training to academic year and summer staff. Develop schedule, training methods, evaluate effectiveness, draft manual and/or materials, analyze training modes, and devise new ones when necessary.

Provide classroom observation in order to assess, evaluate and provide regular feedback on staff performance (i.e., classroom management and delivery of engaging content) and provide necessary coaching to ensure TRIO UB policies, regulations and procedures are being implemented properly by all academic staff.
Update job descriptions for academic program positions, based on University of Minnesota hiring standards and in accordance with grant guidelines and funding. Regularly communicate with all academic staff regarding program expectations, including student work, tutoring, concerns (academic or behavior), and schedule.

TRIO UB is a federally funded, U.S. Department of Education equal educational opportunity program designed to generate within our students (and parents), the skills and motivation necessary to both graduate high school and enter and graduate successfully complete a postsecondary degree. TRIO UB annually serves 118 low-income and first generation college bound youth from four high schools in Minneapolis. The program develops and provides intensive, year-round academic services and enrichment programming to engage students, parents, schools administrators and community partners to advance both individual and systemic change.

Five weeks of non-credit academic instruction for rising 10-12th graders

Residential living experience for participants at the University of Minnesota residence halls

Multi-day annual regional college tour for rising seniors
