LZT is looking for an experienced Safety Critical Software Architects and Systems Engineers to support NASA Johnson Space Center’s Spacecraft Software Engineering Branch as a member of the Orion Flight Software Systems Engineering and Integration Team. Candidates with aerospace experience as well as from other industries, e.g., oil and gas, petrochemical, automotive, autonomous vehicles including aircraft and satellites, are encouraged to apply. Orion is NASA’s next generation crewed spacecraft that will rendezvous with the Gateway space station in Lunar orbit. Gateway is intended to serve as a communication hub, science laboratory, and short-term habitation to stage astronauts transferring to or returning from the lunar surface.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This engineering position involves leadership support for Orion flight software development activities and evaluation of flight software products developed by the prime contractor and subcontractors. Activities will include the oversight, analysis, and evaluation of Orion spacecraft subsystem and flight software requirements, design, software architecture and network development, verification and validation of flight software products, and use of various software engineering tools in support of Orion flight software development. You will work directly with NASA and the prime development contractor to develop solutions to resolve technical issues and influence the software systems development in a manner which ensures a successful mission. You will support Certification of Flight Readiness by providing assessments of the readiness of software for use in flight and recommendations advising the NASA Flight Software System Manager regarding the overall software completeness and quality. You will provide Mission Evaluation Room (MER) real-time support to the Orion Flight Software console during Orion simulations and flights. Strong performers will gain expertise in specific avionics and flight software Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) domains such as fault management, mission event sequencing, aborts, Orion Data Network (ODN), Power and Data Unit (PDU), interfacing with external Artemis flight and ground elements, etc. The best will have the opportunity to become Software Functional Managers for the spacecraft. This work also requires collaboration with test and verification teams, launch vehicle and service module developers, mission and ground system operators, and the various spacecraft system teams such as avionics; command and data handling; crew life support; displays; power; propulsion; thermal; guidance, navigation, and control; communications and tracking; docking, etc. This position requires a self-motivated engineer or computer scientist with strong verbal and written communication skills. In addition to outstanding technical expertise, the individual must be very people savvy, have strong customer relationship skills, possess a positive team-player attitude, be flexible and willing to take on new assignments and responsibilities as they arise, and be an articulate speaker able to communicate complex technical ideas in a convincing manner. Analyze flight software requirements, design, integration, production, verification, validation, and certification.
Evaluate systems engineering products, such as hazard analysis and mission profiles to ensure proper incorporation in vehicle subsystem domains.
Analyze flight software architecture infrastructure and evaluate Central Processing Unit (CPU) utilization and related launch commit criteria.
Coordinate flight software issues and resolution across programs and vehicle systems engineering teams.
Utilize engineering tool suites to manage flight software product development.
Evaluate prime contractor flight software architecture, design, and implementation, integration, and testing.
Analyze and evaluate integration of flight software in test and verification facilities.
Interface with NASA and prime contractor engineering teams.
Required Qualifications:
Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident for access to USG facilities.
B.S. in Aerospace, Electrical, Computer or Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines required.
Greater experience is highly valued, but candidates should possess a minimum of five years of related experience in real-time safety critical software in aerospace or other industries e.g.,
autonomous automobiles or aircraft, commercial software, oil and gas, petrochemical, etc.
Must be flexible, open to new challenges in a dynamic environment, and possess strong technical expertise combined with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities with little supervision.
Must be a highly responsible, team-oriented individual with strong work ethic.
Must have highly developed coordination and organization skills.
Desired Skills/Knowledge:
M.S. or Ph.D. in Aerospace, Electrical, Computer, Systems, or Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines required.
Experience with SysML, Rhapsody, Green Hills Integrity, VxWorks, and NASA Core Flight Software (CFS).
Experience with software configuration management tools such as Git and Subversion.
Experience developing objected-oriented C++ code.
Experience with Agile software development methodology.
Experience with Python
Experience in ARINC 653 based architecture, Time-Triggered Ethernet, Orion Data Network, Power and Data Unit, fault management, mission sequencing, abort.
Familiarity with NASA's Orion spacecraft.
Experience with aerospace vehicle flight software architecture and data networks.
Vehicle-wide knowledge of space vehicle systems, e.g., avionics, command and telemetry, command and control, timeline/vehicle management, service module control, systems
management, crew life support, displays, power, propulsion, thermal, guidance, navigation and control, communications and tracking, NASA Docking System, etc.
Experience in flight software development for human-rated space vehicle, e.g., Gateway, Orion, Commercial Crew Program, International Space Station, or Space Shuttle.
Experience in the full life cycle of human-rated flight projects.
