A Day in the Life of a Senior Cost Estimator
In this role, you'll develop detailed, independent cost estimates across all phases of design and construction for a diverse portfolio of public infrastructure projects. You'll work closely with project managers, engineers, and stakeholders to validate assumptions, analyze change orders, and identify value engineering opportunities. Your expertise directly supports the firm's owners' representative services, helping public sector clients make informed, financially sound decisions on complex infrastructure programs.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing independent cost estimates (ICE) at conceptual, preliminary, and final design stages
- Preparing and reviewing cost estimates for change orders and claims analysis
- Analyzing project plans, specifications, and contract documents to ensure accurate pricing
- Collaborating with project managers, engineers, and stakeholders to validate cost assumptions
- Utilizing estimating software (Sage Estimating or similar) to prepare detailed cost breakdowns
- Maintaining current knowledge of industry pricing, labor rates, and market trends
- Providing expert input on risk assessment and value engineering opportunities
Requirements and Qualifications:
- 10+ years of construction estimating experience
- Prior estimator experience with heavy electrical systems, traction power, signals, DC power, substations, or overhead catenary
- Prior experience working in the field on electrical construction projects
- Experienced in reading construction plans and specifications, and in developing crew compositions, equipment needs, and production rates
- Proficiency in SAGE Estimating or a similar estimating software system
- Experience estimating projects in the transit or rail sector
