Full Job Description

Location: Canton, Ohio (licensed nonprofit halfway house)
Schedule: Full-time; must be available for rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays, and varied hours(days/evenings/overnights as assigned)

Position Summary

The Peer Supporter provides peer support services to residents in a licensed nonprofit halfway house, using lived experience and evidence-informed peer practices to promote recovery, resiliency, wellness, self-determination, and skill development. Services are delivered through a supportive peer relationship and may be provided individually and/or in groups. Peer support includes coaching, system navigation support, life-skills development, linkage to natural supports, and encouragement of hope.

This role must align with Ohio’s peer support services standards and—when providing “peer support services” as defined by Ohio—must be performed by a certified peer supporter in accordance with state rule.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Direct Peer Support (Individual & Group)

Build trust-based peer relationships with residents and provide recovery-oriented support that is individualized and strengths-based.
Provide ongoing exploration of residents’ recovery, resiliency, and wellness needs; support goal-setting and follow-through.
Teach, model, and coach practical life skills (e.g., coping strategies, communication, self-advocacy, pro-social decision-making, daily structure).
Encourage hope and personal responsibility while maintaining appropriate boundaries and ethical conduct.
Assist residents with system navigation and linkage to behavioral health, medical, housing, employment, benefits, and community resources.
Support access to and development of natural support systems (family, faith community, mentors, recovery networks).

Care Coordination & Team Collaboration

Coordinate and communicate with interdisciplinary team members to support residents’ stabilization, engagement, and progress.
Attend treatment team meetings and contribute peer perspective to resident-centered planning (as assigned).
Promote coordination and linkage among providers, appointments, and services.

Crisis Support & Safety

Assist with crisis intervention and stabilization support within agency protocols; promptly escalate risk concerns to on-duty leadership/clinical staff.
Comply with confidentiality requirements and mandatory reporting laws/policies.

Documentation & Compliance

Complete accurate, timely documentation of peer services and resident interactions per agency policy and applicable funder/licensing requirements.
Maintain certification standing (if certified), including adherence to the peer code of ethics and renewal requirements.
Deliver services in a culturally inclusive manner and do not practice or facilitate discrimination.

Transportation & Community Support

Transport residents as needed for programming, appointments, employment-related activities, or community supports (agency vehicle and/or personal vehicle per policy).
Conduct outreach and community education activities related to recovery supports as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Ohio Certified Peer Supporter (e.g., CPRS/CYPS/CFPS), or ability to obtain certification within an employer-defined timeframe if the role requires delivery of “peer support services” under Ohio’s definition. (Peer support services must be delivered by a certified peer supporter under Ohio rule.)
High school diploma or GED (required for certification).
Valid driver’s license, insurable driving record, and ability to meet agency driving requirements.
Not currently on supervision (e.g., probation/parole/community control) and able to meet background check/eligibility requirements consistent with certification and agency standards. (Certification requires BCI/FBI checks and includes disqualifying offenses provisions.)
Ability to work weekends, holidays, and various shifts (rotating schedule).
Strong communication, boundary-setting, and de-escalation skills; ability to relate to residents respectfully and professionally.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior peer support, recovery coaching, reentry support, or residential services experience.
Familiarity with Stark County behavioral health resources and community-based supports.
Experience facilitating groups (recovery, life skills, wellness, relapse prevention support).
Basic computer skills and experience with electronic documentation.

Supervision & Working Relationships

Peer Supporters must be supervised in accordance with Ohio standards (qualified peer supervisor with required training and experience and/or licensed clinician meeting rule criteria).
Works collaboratively with residential staff, case management, clinical partners, and program leadership.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Residential halfway house environment; frequent interaction with individuals in early recovery and/or with behavioral health needs.
Ability to stand/walk for extended periods, climb stairs, respond to emergencies, and transport residents as needed.
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs (supplies/materials) and perform routine office/computer tasks.
