Full Job Description

Medical Billing & A/R Specialist

Pay: $24.00 to $30.00 per hour DOE

Full Time | Fully Remote | Alaska Residents Only

We are an Alaska based Medical Billing and Coding company seeking an experienced Medical Billing and Accounts Receivable Specialist to join our team.

This position is fully remote. Applicants must currently reside in Alaska.

This is not an entry level position. We are looking for someone with strong medical billing and insurance A/R experience who can independently manage accounts from initial follow up through resolution.

The ideal candidate understands that working A/R means more than checking claim status. You should be able to identify why a claim has not paid, determine the appropriate next step, take action, and continue following the account until it is resolved.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

Pulling, reviewing, and working A/R and aging reports
Prioritizing outstanding accounts and maintaining consistent follow up
Insurance claim follow up and claim status
Researching unpaid, denied, rejected, and incorrectly processed claims
Identifying underpayments and payer processing errors
Filing corrected claims and claim resubmissions
Preparing and filing reconsiderations and appeals
Writing clear and well supported appeal letters
Reviewing EOBs and ERAs for correct claim processing
Researching and interpreting insurance policies and payer guidelines
Communicating with insurance representatives regarding difficult or incorrectly processed claims
Escalating issues and challenging payer determinations when appropriate
Collecting missing patient or insurance information
Answering patient billing questions and complaints
Communicating professionally with patients, clients, insurance companies, adjusters, attorneys, team members, and other departments
Using insurance portals and clearinghouses
Identifying recurring denial, payment, or workflow issues
Assisting other billing staff with difficult accounts when needed
Working within multiple practice management and billing software systems
Maintaining detailed and accurate account notes
All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Previous medical billing experience is required
Strong insurance A/R experience is required
Experience independently pulling and working aging reports
Experience with denials, reconsiderations, corrected claims, and appeals
Strong understanding of insurance claim processing and reimbursement
Ability to read and interpret EOBs, ERAs, payer policies, and insurance guidelines
Strong written communication skills
Strong telephone communication and problem solving skills
Ability to confidently communicate with insurance representatives and challenge incorrect claim processing when necessary
Ability to research an issue and determine the appropriate next step independently
Excellent organization and follow through
Ability to manage multiple outstanding issues without losing track of necessary follow up
Ability to learn and adapt to multiple billing systems, insurance portals, and client workflows
Must be dependable, detail oriented, organized, and highly motivated
CPC, CPB, or other AAPC certification preferred but not required

What we are looking for:

We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their A/R.

If an insurance representative gives you an answer that does not make sense, we expect you to research it. If a claim was processed incorrectly, we expect you to determine why and work toward getting it corrected. If an appeal or reconsideration is necessary, you should be comfortable researching the issue and putting together a clear and supported argument.

We need someone with excellent follow through who does not simply document an issue and move on. Outstanding accounts should remain on your radar until they are appropriately resolved.

You do not need to know every payer, specialty, or software system we use. You do need enough medical billing experience to know how to investigate something you have not encountered before, adapt to different systems and payer requirements, and follow the account through to resolution.
