Job Overview

SPIRAC® is a globally recognized supplier of engineered wastewater solids-handling and material-conveyance equipment. Since 1966, SPIRAC has pioneered shaftless spiral conveyor technology and continues to develop innovative solutions for municipal and industrial applications.

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Project Designer to join our Alpharetta, Georgia team. This position develops 3D models, general arrangement drawings, customer submittals, fabrication drawings, bills of materials, and production-ready documentation for custom conveyor and solids-handling equipment.

The Mechanical Project Designer works closely with Project Engineers and Project Managers to translate customer specifications and established engineering concepts into accurate, manufacturable designs.

Position Tasks & Responsibilities

Create and maintain 3D CAD models using Autodesk Inventor.
Prepare General Arrangement (GA) drawings, customer submittals, detail drawings, fabrication drawings, and production packages.
Interpret customer specifications, contract drawings, and equipment layouts under the direction of the Project Engineer.
Develop equipment layouts and configurations based on established SPIRAC designs and standards.
Assist Project Engineers with routine equipment sizing, component selection, and basic design calculations.
Prepare and maintain bills of materials (BOMs).
Review vendor and shop drawings for dimensional and design consistency.
Incorporate customer and Engineer comments into drawings and submittal packages.
Coordinate design details with Engineering, Project Management, Purchasing, fabrication personnel, vendors, and field personnel.
Support resolution of fabrication, installation, and field issues related to equipment design.
Maintain drawing revisions, CAD standards, and project documentation.
Participate in design reviews and continuous-improvement activities.

Education

Associate Degree in Mechanical Design, CAD/Drafting, Engineering Technology, or related technical field preferred.
Equivalent relevant technical experience will be considered.

Experience

2–5 years of mechanical design, CAD, drafting, or industrial equipment design experience preferred.
Experience with fabricated mechanical equipment, conveyors, material-handling systems, machinery, or similar industrial products.
Experience preparing fabrication drawings, BOMs, and customer submittal drawings.
Experience in an engineered-to-order, project-based manufacturing or engineering environment preferred.
Conveyor, wastewater, or solids-handling experience is beneficial but not required.

Technical Skills

Strong proficiency with Autodesk Inventor preferred; 3D CAD modeling experience required.
Strong understanding of mechanical drawings, dimensional tolerancing, fabrication practices, and manufacturing processes.
Ability to interpret specifications, contract drawings, and equipment layouts.
Familiarity with motors, gearboxes, bearings, drives, and other industrial equipment components.
Familiarity with conveyor calculations, motor/drive selection, and material-handling design preferred.
Strong mechanical aptitude and practical understanding of how equipment is fabricated, assembled, and installed.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Physical / Work Environment

Primarily office-based with periodic visits to fabrication facilities, wastewater treatment plants, construction sites, and customer locations.
Must be able to safely work in industrial and construction environments while wearing required PPE.
Ability and willingness to travel approximately 10–20%.

The Mechanical Project Designer is responsible for developing accurate and timely mechanical designs and engineering documentation. The Project Engineer retains responsibility for engineering decisions, final equipment sizing, and technical approval.
