OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Special Education Aide with Health Care Job Description

POSITION » SPECIAL EDUCATION AIDE WITH HEALTH CARE

Urban Discovery Academy (UDA) is an TK-8th grade public school system in San Diego, CA. The Special Education Aide serves in a central role to provide support and health case assistance (including toileting) for students with an individualized education plan. The position requires this individual to be a positive contributor, highly communicative, service driven, kind, empathetic, technologically proficient,patient, collaborative, flexible, mission driven, and solutions oriented.

CLASSIFICATION » This is an at-will classified position applicable to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

SUPERVISOR » Special Education Aides report to the Ed Specialist for daily assignments at the direction of the School Principal. This position is evaluated by the principal or designee.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS » Essential elements of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Follow schedule assigned by supervisor;
Assist with instruction and tutoring to reinforce or follow-up on the teacher’s lessons;
Encourage the student(s) and help maintain a supportive learning environment.
Assist with health care needs for students in need, including wheelchair and toileting assistance;
Assist student(s) with assigned special projects;
Assist Ed Specialist(s) with implementation of Individual Educational Plans (I.E.P.s) and in administering a variety of tests and evaluative exercises;
Assist with academic needs of students;
Observe and report unusual or atypical student behavior to school authority;
Assist in maintaining student control and in implementing behavioral modification systems;
Assist teachers and/or students during morning, lunch duty, or other activities, including general education student supervision.
Attend school events such as parent conferences as requested.
Respect the confidential nature of pupil records and school reports.

Other Responsibilities

Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings and collaborations as requested;
Supervise and provide assistance to students as directed by supervisor or designee;
Direct student groups to and from transition areas (e.g. lunch) in a safe and organized manner;
Maintain a harmonious learning community by encouraging peaceful resolution of conflicts;
Clean and sanitize tables between classes or at the end of lunch, per health department;
Assist with street crossing and pick-up/drop-off duties in the mornings and afternoons;
Accompany student(s) on field trips as needed;
Assist with teachers and/or office staff with clerical tasks as needed;
Other duties as assigned or needed.

Qualifications

Knowledge of techniques and methods of effective instruction for students with special needs;
Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;
Knowledge of arithmetic calculations;
Ability to project a professional constructive, stable, and positive attitude;
Ability to learn pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without close and immediate supervision;
Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of child growth and development, including students with medical needs;
Ability to execute oral and written directions and follow through;
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relations with others;
Ability to keep accurate records, logs, and time sheets;
Ability to provide direct health services to students including toileting assistance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for over 50% of the time;
Must be able to move and transverse the office, classrooms, and school.
Must be able to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer;
Must be able to navigate stairs and occasional ascend or descend ladders;
Must be able to work on computers and equipment including under desks or tables as needed.
Must be able to frequently communicate with students & other community members.
Must be able to observe computer screen and all members of the school community while on site or on home visits;
Must be able to carry/lift 25 lbs at a height of 3-4 feet and a distance of up to 10 feet at a time for setting up school related activities;
Must be able to push school aged children throughout campus in a wheelchair;
Must be able to provide toileting assistance to school aged children;
Works on school sites and makes community/home visits as required.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TECHNICAL SKILLS

High school diploma with enrollment or completion of post-secondary school preferred;
Experience assisting students with healthcare needs and toileting preferred;
Current First aid Certificate, CPR Certificate, and Background Checks;
Must be able to operate a computer and all computer programs associated with the position at the time of employment;
Must be able to work standard office equipment associated with this position.
Must be adept at supporting students in a classroom and playground environment.

Pay: $18.50 - $25.00 per hour
