Cook / Kitchen Manager Position at Quiet Mind Retreat and Spa in Julian

Quiet Mind Retreat Julian, a high-end wellness retreat nestled in the peaceful mountains of San Diego’s countryside, is seeking an experienced and reliable Cook / Kitchen Manager to lead our retreat kitchen and uphold the high culinary standards our guests expect.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys creating nourishing, beautifully presented meals in a calm and intentional environment while also taking responsibility for the organization, cleanliness, and leadership of the kitchen.

The Cook / Kitchen Manager will be responsible for preparing meals, maintaining excellent kitchen standards, coordinating with other cooks, and ensuring a smooth culinary experience for guests throughout their stay.

Key Responsibilities

Kitchen Leadership

Take responsibility for the organization, cleanliness, and standards of the retreat kitchen
Coordinate with other cooks and attend occasional kitchen check-ins or meetings
Ensure consistency and quality across all meals served
Maintain excellent food safety and cleanliness standards at all times

Cooking & Meal Preparation

Prepare nourishing, wellness-inspired meals for retreat guests, primarily vegetarian with occasional vegan options
Plate and present meals with attention to quality and guest experience
Adapt meals to dietary needs such as gluten free or vegan requests
Assist with menu execution and occasional planning

Kitchen Upkeep

Wash dishes and maintain a clean kitchen throughout service
Keep cooking stations organized and stocked
Assist with basic kitchen prep and cleaning as needed
Ensure the kitchen is left clean and ready for the next shift

Guest Experience

Deliver meals to guest suites with a warm and welcoming demeanor
Help create a calm, caring atmosphere that reflects the retreat’s values

Schedule

This position requires split shifts on Fridays and weekends, typically:
11:30 AM – 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Weekday shifts may vary depending on occupancy and kitchen needs, but are usually evening shifts.

Requirements

Previous professional cooking experience required
Experience managing or leading a kitchen strongly preferred
Strong organization and cleanliness standards
Ability to work independently and take ownership of the kitchen
Creativity with vegetarian and health-conscious cuisine
Willingness to assist with dishwashing and kitchen cleaning as part of the role
Reliable and team-oriented with a positive attitude
