Independent Contractor Nurse Practitioner – Onsite Construction Medical Clinic (1099)
Position Summary
The Independent Contractor Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides occupational medicine and primary injury care services at an onsite construction project medical clinic under an Independent Contractor Agreement. The NP independently evaluates and treats work-related injuries and illnesses within the scope of licensure, collaborative practice requirements, and applicable state laws. Services include occupational health examinations, injury management, emergency response, medical surveillance, and regulatory compliance.
The Independent Contractor exercises independent clinical judgment while collaborating with the supervising physician, client representatives, safety personnel, and other healthcare professionals to promote employee health, workplace safety, and timely return-to-work.
This is a 1099 Independent Contractor position and does not create an employer-employee relationship.
Scope of Services
The Independent Contractor Nurse Practitioner shall provide professional medical services including, but not limited to:
Occupational Medicine
- Evaluate and treat occupational injuries and illnesses.
- Perform return-to-work and fit-for-duty evaluations.
- Manage workers' compensation cases within scope of practice.
- Perform OSHA-required medical surveillance examinations.
- Conduct pre-placement, post-offer, annual, and regulatory physical examinations.
- Assist with DOT medical examinations when authorized and appropriately certified.
- Evaluate environmental and heat-related illnesses common to construction settings.
Clinical Services
- Obtain comprehensive medical histories and perform physical examinations.
- Diagnose and manage acute illnesses and injuries.
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic testing within scope of practice.
- Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with state law and collaborative practice requirements.
- Perform minor office procedures including:
- Wound care and laceration repair
- Splinting and orthopedic stabilization
- Incision and drainage
- Foreign body removal
- Suture and staple removal
- Joint injections (where permitted)
- Administer immunizations and medications.
- Interpret laboratory studies, EKGs, spirometry, audiograms, and digital X-rays when applicable.
Emergency Response
- Respond to workplace medical emergencies.
- Provide emergency assessment, stabilization, and treatment until transfer to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) when necessary.
- Coordinate referrals to emergency departments, specialists, and community providers.
- Participate in construction site emergency preparedness activities.
Occupational Health Programs
- Support workplace injury prevention initiatives.
- Participate in wellness and health promotion programs.
- Assist with respirator clearance evaluations, hearing conservation, and medical surveillance programs.
- Educate employees on occupational health risks and injury prevention strategies.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Complete work status reports and workers' compensation documentation.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, DOT, DEA (if applicable), collaborative practice requirements, and all applicable federal and state regulations.
- Protect patient confidentiality at all times.
Professional Responsibilities
The Independent Contractor shall:
- Exercise independent clinical judgment within the scope of licensure.
- Maintain all required professional licenses and certifications.
- Maintain collaborative or supervisory agreements when required by state law.
- Maintain professional liability insurance unless otherwise specified in the Independent Contractor Agreement.
- Comply with all construction site safety requirements and wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain professional conduct while representing the onsite medical clinic.
Minimum Qualifications
Required
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
- Current unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license.
- Current national certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Current DEA registration (if prescribing controlled substances).
- Current BLS certification.
- Current ACLS certification.
- Minimum two (2) years of clinical practice experience.
- Experience evaluating and treating acute illnesses and injuries.
Preferred
- Occupational Medicine experience.
- Urgent Care or Emergency Medicine experience.
- Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) certification.
- Construction, industrial, manufacturing, or onsite clinic experience.
- Workers' compensation experience.
- DOT medical examination experience (where authorized).
- Experience with OSHA medical surveillance programs.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to respond rapidly to emergencies across an active construction site.
- Lift or assist with moving patients up to 50 pounds with assistance.
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment, including hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, and uneven terrain.
Work Environment
Services are performed within an active commercial or industrial construction project. The Independent Contractor may be exposed to construction equipment, heavy machinery, noise, dust, weather extremes, and other industrial hazards. Compliance with all client safety requirements is mandatory.
Equipment & Administrative Support
The Company will provide clinic facilities, medical equipment, diagnostic equipment, medical supplies, electronic medical record access, and administrative support necessary for the provision of contracted services unless otherwise specified in the Independent Contractor Agreement.
Independent Contractor Status
This position is provided under a 1099 Independent Contractor Agreement. Nothing contained in this Position Description shall be interpreted as creating an employer-employee relationship.
The Independent Contractor:
- Exercises independent clinical judgment in providing professional services.
- Is responsible for all federal, state, and local tax obligations.
- Is not eligible for employee wages, overtime, benefits, paid leave, retirement plans, unemployment insurance, or workers' compensation benefits unless otherwise required by law.
- Is responsible for maintaining all required licenses, certifications, continuing education, collaborative practice agreements (when applicable), DEA registration, and malpractice insurance unless otherwise agreed in writing.
- May provide services to other clients provided such services do not create a conflict of interest or interfere with contractual obligations.
Schedule
- Services are provided according to the agreed project schedule.
- Coverage may include weekdays, evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency response based on construction project needs.

The terms governing the engagement shall be contained in the executed Independent Contractor Agreement.
Pay: $42.00 - $52.00 per hour
