About Martha's House of Hope
Martha's House of Hope provides safe housing and comprehensive support for pregnant women and young mothers experiencing homelessness or housing instability. Our mission is to empower mothers to build healthy, stable, and self-sufficient futures through compassionate care, practical support, and the love of Christ.
We are seeking a compassionate, emotionally resilient, and mission-driven Family Life Specialist to join our team.
This position is far more than a typical office job. Our residents have often experienced significant trauma, including domestic violence, childhood abuse, substance use disorders, mental health challenges, poverty, human trafficking, and other adverse life experiences. The Family Life Specialist serves as a steady, supportive presence while helping mothers navigate crisis, develop healthy life skills, and work toward long-term stability.
While this work is incredibly meaningful and rewarding, it can also be emotionally demanding. Success in this role requires patience, healthy boundaries, flexibility, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm and compassionate during difficult situations. Every day presents unique challenges, but it also offers the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of mothers and their children.
This is an onsite position that provides direct support and supervision within the maternity home. Because consistent staff presence is essential to resident safety and program success, this position is not eligible for remote work.
Work Schedule
- Approximately 30 hours per week
- Generally Monday–Friday from 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
- Schedule may be adjusted based on resident appointments, trainings, and the needs of the maternity home.
- Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
- Flexibility is expected, as no two days are alike in a residential program.
- This position is fully onsite and does not allow for remote work.
Position Summary
The Family Life Specialist provides daily support, mentoring, case management, and program coordination for pregnant women and parenting mothers living at Martha's House of Hope. This individual helps residents establish goals, overcome barriers, develop independent living skills, and connect with community resources while fostering a safe, supportive, and Christ-centered home environment.
This role focuses on resident support and program coordination and does not include volunteer recruitment or volunteer management.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Resident Support & Case Management
- Build trusting, professional relationships with residents while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Conduct regular one-on-one mentoring sessions and document resident progress.
- Assist residents in developing individualized goals related to housing, employment, education, parenting, financial stability, and personal growth.
- Encourage accountability while providing compassionate support.
- Connect residents with community resources, healthcare providers, counseling services, educational opportunities, and other support systems.
- Advocate for residents while encouraging independence and self-sufficiency.
Trauma-Informed Care & Crisis Intervention
- Utilize trauma-informed care principles in every resident interaction.
- Provide support to women who have experienced trauma, domestic violence, substance use, mental illness, poverty, or other significant life challenges.
- Respond appropriately and calmly during crisis situations using sound judgment and de-escalation techniques.
- Recognize situations requiring intervention from emergency services or outside professionals.
- Maintain healthy professional boundaries while building trusting relationships.
- Help foster a physically, emotionally, and spiritually safe living environment.
Life Skills & Program Development
- Coordinate and facilitate life-skills programming including parenting education, budgeting, nutrition, employment readiness, healthy relationships, and independent living skills.
- Identify educational opportunities that support resident growth.
- Collaborate with community professionals to provide workshops and educational programming.
- Encourage participation and celebrate resident accomplishments.
Faith & Independent Living Support
- Foster an environment that reflects Martha's House of Hope's Christian mission and values.
- Encourage healthy daily routines, personal responsibility, and positive decision-making.
- Support residents in pursuing employment, education, healthcare, and stable housing.
- Model professionalism, compassion, grace, and accountability.
Documentation & Collaboration
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely resident documentation.
- Complete progress notes and case documentation according to agency standards.
- Ensure compliance with confidentiality laws and organizational policies.
- Communicate resident progress, concerns, and program needs with the Executive Director.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and continuous program improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Education, Criminal Justice, or a related field OR equivalent professional experience working with vulnerable populations.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience working with individuals experiencing trauma, homelessness, domestic violence, substance use disorders, mental illness, or other significant life challenges.
- Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed care and person-centered support.
- Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and effectively de-escalate difficult situations.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team.
- Valid driver's license with a driving record acceptable for agency insurance.
- Willingness to obtain CPR/First Aid certification (training provided).
- Certified Mandatory Reporter (or willingness to obtain certification).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Education, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field.
- Three or more years of experience providing direct services to vulnerable populations.
- Experience in residential programming, nonprofit organizations, maternity homes, domestic violence programs, homeless services, behavioral health, or substance use treatment.
- Experience facilitating life-skills classes or educational workshops.
- Knowledge of community resources for pregnant women and families.
- Experience with case management and documentation systems.
