Operations & Growth Manager The Happy Tart | Full-Time | In Person | Falls Church, VA

Position Overview The Happy Tart is a 100% gluten-free bakery/café looking for an Operations & Growth Manager to run point on the business day-to-day and drive the projects that take it to the next level. This isn't a maintain-the-status-quo role — you'll own operations while also building the systems, processes, and initiatives that don't exist yet.

Think less "shift supervisor," more "person who can take a messy problem, turn it into a plan, and execute it without hand-holding." You'll work directly with ownership and have real latitude to identify what's broken, propose the fix, and drive it to done.

Key Responsibilities:

Operations

Own day-to-day operations: staffing, workflow, guest experience, cleanliness, consistency
Serve as the on-site decision-maker on weekends — the "adult in the room" ensuring smooth operations when ownership isn't there, owning any issue that comes up without needing to escalate
Ensure food safety/sanitation compliance (Fairfax County follows the FDA Food Code)
Troubleshoot in real time — staffing gaps, supply issues, equipment failures, guest problems

Ordering & Inventory

Full ownership of ordering across vendors — ingredients, packaging, supplies, equipment
Manage inventory levels: counts, par levels, waste tracking, and stock rotation
Build and maintain vendor relationships; negotiate pricing and resolve delivery/quality issues
Forecast needs against sales trends and seasonal demand to avoid shortages or overstock
Own the cost side of inventory: track spend, flag variance, and tighten processes that bleed money

Team Leadership

Hire, train, and coach staff; set and hold the team to clear standards
Build out training materials and onboarding as the business's SOPs get formalized
Handle conflict and performance issues directly and fairly

Project & Growth Work

Take on discrete projects start-to-finish: new vendor rollouts, menu/process changes, seasonal initiatives, systems buildout
Help build and maintain the company's Operations & Training Manual
Identify inefficiencies and bring solutions, not just problems
Support budget tracking; flag trends that affect the bottom line

Compliance & Standards

Maintain safety, sanitation, and facility standards
Keep required operational records and documentation current

Happy Team: engaged staff, low turnover, strong training completion
Happy Customers: consistent hospitality, speed, and quality; fewer complaints; repeat visits
Sound Operations: inventory accuracy, waste control, weekend consistency, cost discipline
Growth: projects delivered on time, process improvements implemented, tangible progress on the Operations Manual

What We're Looking For

A project management mindset: you break ambiguous asks into steps and drive them to completion
Comfortable being handed something with no playbook and building the playbook
Prior leadership experience in hospitality, food service, retail, or similar
Ordering/inventory management experience — this is a major, high-accountability part of the job
Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
Calm under pressure, resourceful, low-ego
Bias toward action over waiting for instructions
Trustworthy to run the show solo on weekends

Physical/Schedule

Full-time, in-person; flexible schedule incl. mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays — weekend coverage is a core, non-negotiable part of this role
On your feet for extended periods; lift/carry up to 50 lbs
