Full Job Description

Clinical Rater

Location: Orange County/Long Beach Department: Clinical Research Reports To: Director of Clinical Assessments Employment Type: Full Time

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Rater to join our team supporting central nervous system (CNS) and psychiatric clinical trials. The Clinical Rater is responsible for administering standardized, validated psychiatric rating scales to study participants with precision, consistency, and strict adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP). This role is critical to generating reliable efficacy and safety data across trials in indications such as major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and substance use disorders.

Key Responsibilities

Administer structured and semi-structured clinical interviews and rating scales (e.g., HAM-D, MADRS, PANSS, YMRS, CGI-S/I, C-SSRS, SCID, MINI) to study participants per protocol requirements
Conduct assessments via in-person, telephone, or video (remote rating) modalities as required by study design
Maintain strict fidelity to scale administration guidelines and inter-rater reliability standards; participate in ongoing reliability/calibration exercises
Complete rater certification and qualification requirements for each assigned protocol, including sponsor- or vendor-specific training programs
Accurately and legibly document assessment results in source documents and electronic data capture (EDC) systems within specified timelines
Identify and escalate safety signals (e.g., suicidality, clinical deterioration) to the Principal Investigator and study team per protocol and site safety procedures
Collaborate with Principal Investigators, Sub-Investigators, Study Coordinators, and Sponsors/CROs to ensure protocol compliance
Participate in site initiation visits, investigator meetings, and rater training/certification sessions
Maintain participant confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA, GCP, and applicable regulatory requirements
Support recruitment and screening activities as needed, including eligibility assessments
Respond to monitoring visit findings and queries related to rating scale data in a timely manner

Required Qualifications

Foreign MD
Master's degree or higher in Psychology, Nursing, Social Work, Counseling, or related behavioral health field (Bachelor's with significant relevant experience may be considered)
Active, unrestricted clinical license where required (e.g., LCSW, LMHC, RN, PMHNP, PhD/PsyD)
Minimum [1–3] years of experience administering standardized psychiatric rating scales in a clinical trial or clinical research setting
Demonstrated proficiency with common psychiatric outcome measures (e.g., HAM-D, MADRS, PANSS, YMRS, CGI, C-SSRS)
Strong understanding of GCP/ICH guidelines and clinical trial regulatory requirements
Excellent interviewing, observational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with participants who may be experiencing significant psychiatric symptoms
Meticulous attention to detail and strong documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

Rater certification(s) from recognized training/certification bodies for specific scales
Experience across multiple CNS indications (mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety/trauma disorders)
Experience with remote/central rating models and video-based assessments

Core Competencies

Objectivity and consistency in scoring to minimize rater drift and bias
Sound clinical judgment, particularly around safety and risk assessment
Ability to manage a caseload across multiple concurrent studies/protocols
Professionalism and empathy when working with vulnerable populations
Strong written and verbal communication for accurate case documentation

Working Conditions

May require travel to research sites for training, certification, or in-person assessments
May involve flexible or non-standard hours to accommodate participant scheduling, including evenings or weekends

Pay: $80,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
