North America (Remote/Home-Based with Extensive Travel)
Position Overview
The Field Service Engineer supports the installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of ALD vacuum processing equipment at customer facilities throughout North America and internationally. Working alongside senior engineers, you will receive structured technical training while developing the skills required to become an independent technical expert supporting some of the most advanced thermal processing systems in the industry.
This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy solving complex technical challenges, working directly with customers, and traveling to a wide variety of industrial facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with installation, commissioning, startup, maintenance, and repair of ALD vacuum processing equipment at customer sites.
- Support senior field service engineers during customer service assignments and project activities.
- Participate in structured technical training programs covering vacuum systems, controls, automation, safety, and process technologies.
- Work closely with commissioning teams from ALD Germany during equipment installations and system startups.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and vacuum system issues.
- Provide detailed service reports documenting activities, findings, and recommendations.
- Assist with spare parts identification, inventory recommendations, and technical documentation.
- Maintain accurate customer and project information while supporting customer satisfaction initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with all company and customer safety requirements.
- Support additional technical service and project activities as assigned.

This position provides a clear pathway for advancement into senior technical service and commissioning roles.
Qualifications Required
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Electronics, Mechatronics, Industrial Technology, or a related technical field; equivalent military technical training and experience will also be considered.
- Understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard PC-based applications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to obtain and maintain a valid passport.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively.
- Background screening and pre-employment drug screen
Preferred
- Experience with industrial equipment, automation systems, vacuum technology, heat treatment, metallurgy, or related manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with PLC controls and industrial instrumentation.
- Experience supporting field installations, commissioning, maintenance, or technical service activities.
- Military technical maintenance experience is highly valued.
Travel Requirements
This position requires extensive travel throughout North America and occasional international travel. Travel may exceed 75% during training and project commissioning periods. Flexibility to respond to customer requirements on short notice is essential.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in industrial and manufacturing environments.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, and work at heights when required.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, test equipment, and diagnostic instruments.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, fall protection equipment, and arc flash PPE.

This is a hourly, non-exempt under the Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible for overtime in accordance with FLSA labor laws. This position reports to the Vice President Operations & Finance of ALD Vacuum Technologies North America Inc. Hourly rate commensurate on experience, guaranteed minimum of 40 hours per week.

Work Location: On the road
