Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and skilled Drill Operator to operate horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment for our telecommunications infrastructure projects. The Drill Operator is responsible for safely and accurately installing underground conduit and utilities while working closely with the drill locator and crew to ensure successful boring operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate horizontal directional drilling (HDD) rigs to install underground telecommunications conduit and utilities
- Set up, position, and level drilling equipment at job sites according to bore plans and specifications
- Interpret bore path plans, utility maps, and engineering drawings to execute precise drilling operations
- Coordinate with drill locator to maintain accurate depth, direction, and grade throughout the bore
- Monitor drilling fluid (mud) mixture, pressure, and flow rates to optimize drilling performance
- Adjust drilling parameters including thrust, pullback, rotation speed, and fluid pressure based on soil conditions
- Conduct pre-operation equipment inspections and perform routine maintenance on drilling equipment
- Select and manage appropriate drill bits, reamers, and tooling for varying soil conditions and bore specifications
- Execute pullback operations to install conduit, pipe, or cable through completed bore paths
- Maintain clean and organized job sites, ensuring proper storage and handling of equipment and materials
- Communicate effectively with crew members, project managers, and clients
- Complete daily logs, bore reports, and documentation accurately and thoroughly
- Ensure strict compliance with all safety regulations, OSHA standards, and company policies
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and perform minor repairs as needed
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience operating HDD equipment (or comparable heavy equipment experience with willingness to train)
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; CDL preferred
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of hydraulic systems
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and boring diagrams
- Knowledge of soil conditions and how they affect drilling operations
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make quick decisions under pressure
- Effective communication skills and team-oriented mindset
- Physical ability to perform demanding work in various weather conditions
- Commitment to safety and quality workmanship
Preferred:
- CDL Class A or B license
- Experience with telecommunications or fiber optic installation projects
- Familiarity with Ditch Witch, Vermeer, or American Augers equipment
- Knowledge of drilling fluid systems and mixing procedures
- Certification in HDD operations or heavy equipment operation
- Experience with locating equipment and understanding of tracking systems
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
