Overview:
The Department of Clinical Sciences at the Auburn University (AU) College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking applicants to fill a full-time, 12-month/year appointment. Depending on experience, qualifications and interest, the successful candidate may be appointed to either a tenure-track (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) or non-tenure track (Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) position in medical oncology.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will participate in teaching, clinical service, and research/scholarly activity. Teaching responsibilities include the clinical and didactic instructional activities of professional veterinary medicine and postgraduate training programs related to medical oncology. Clinical and research collaboration with other hospital services and departments is welcomed. Clinical service and research responsibilities are negotiable and will depend on the successful candidate’s interests and the type of appointment, i.e., clinical vs. tenure track.
Qualifications:
Qualified applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree at the time employment begins, have completed residency training in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in oncology (ACVIM/ECVIM-Oncology), and be a Diplomate of ACVIM/ECVIM-Oncology or qualified to sit for the ACVIM/ECVIM-Oncology specialty examination. Eligibility for faculty veterinary licensure in the State of Alabama is also required. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

Description of Oncology Service: The oncology service consists of a multi-disciplinary clinical team that provides diagnostic and therapeutic oncology for over 5,000 medical, surgical, and radiation patients each year. The oncology service is currently composed of two board-certified medical oncologists, two board-certified radiation oncologists, one board-certified surgical oncologist, 4 medical oncology residents, and dedicated technical support. The team shares responsibility for clinical instruction of professional students, residents and interns; and participates in active clinical and translational research programs. The Oncology Service currently has five ongoing clinical research studies and is a member of the Clinical Oncology Trials Consortium (COTC). Ample opportunity exists to develop independent or collaborative projects with the CVM and on main campus. The faculty and residents hold monthly oncology-pathology case rounds that involve participation from radiology and clinical and anatomic pathology services.
The CVM is located on 350 acres at the perimeter of the Auburn University campus. The Wilford and Kate Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility, was completed in 2014, and provides 208,000 square feet dedicated to meeting the College’s mission of practicing the highest standards of veterinary medicine. The oncology service occupies a dedicated space within the hospital with a spacious chemotherapy administration room, treatment room, student rounds room, doctors’ work room/office, clinical lab space with a doubled headed microscope equipped with a camera and large display monitor, electrochemotherapy equipment (ElectroVet S13 with various probe options), and a special procedures room with a service ultrasound machine and ECG. Also included in the oncology service is a surgical oncology suite for biopsies and minor procedures. The linear accelerator vault, located just steps away from the oncology wing, houses a Varian Edge Radiosurgery System and the radiation treatment facility can accommodate both small and large animal patients. Located adjacent to the linear accelerator vault is the imaging building housing GE 128-slice CT scanner and 3T Phillips MRI. Other onsite hospital equipment includes near infrared fluorescent imaging capabilities, a Siemens digital RF suite, GE interventional radiology suite, and Co2 surgical laser (Aesculight).
The Bailey hospital has a robust diagnostic imaging service and imaging support includes after-hours ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging. A licensed centralized pharmacy with five full-time very helpful pharmacists and one pharmacist board certified by the International College of Veterinary Pharmacy (DICVP) supports patient medication needs. The hospital is further supported by a clinical laboratory staffed full-time with clinical pathologists. An after-hours STAT lab is available for hematology (Heska and Idexx), chemistries (Idexx), blood gases and electrolytes (Nova Prime+VET), thromboelastography (traditional and Entegrion VCM VET), and Abaxis coagulation profiles. ICU/IMC monitoring capabilities include telemetry (Fukuda DS1800), pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2, direct and indirect blood pressure, and point-of-care ultrasounds (4 Clarius C7s, 2 Sonosite SIIs, Samsung HM70A EVO). Advanced therapeutic modalities include Prismaflex CRRT system (capabilities for hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, ultrafiltration, and therapeutic plasma exchange), high-flow nasal oxygen (2 Volumax units), hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HVM unit), and mechanical ventilation (Maquet Servo-I, Respironics Puritan Bennet 840, and LVT2000).
