Position Summary
Coutts Brothers Inc. is seeking an experienced Field Estimator to assess, scope, and price utility construction projects using project documentation, field observations, and detailed cost analysis.
The Field Estimator is responsible for verifying work-order accuracy, evaluating site conditions, identifying project requirements, and developing estimates that appropriately account for labor, equipment, materials, safety requirements, and environmental considerations.
This position supports projects that may include:
- Electric transmission and distribution construction
- Substation construction and maintenance
- Distribution line inspection
- Distributed-generation interconnections
- Broadband make-ready work
- Grid modernization and system betterment projects
The Field Estimator plays an important role in project planning, pricing accuracy, operational efficiency, and company profitability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct field assessments to verify the scope, feasibility, and accuracy of work orders.
- Review and interpret construction plans, specifications, work orders, maps, prints, and related project documents.
- Identify errors, omissions, discrepancies, and potential inefficiencies within work orders and project plans.
- Collaborate with engineers, field planners, project managers, estimators, superintendents, and field crews to clarify project requirements.
- Develop detailed pricing estimates based on field observations, project requirements, and available data.
- Accurately account for labor, equipment, materials, subcontracted services, and other anticipated project costs.
- Evaluate access limitations, environmental conditions, safety requirements, traffic-control needs, and other factors that may affect project execution or cost.
- Identify and confirm electrical system configurations and voltages based on available documentation and field conditions.
- Participate in project meetings and conference calls concerning upcoming and active work.
- Complete onsite assessments, photographs, documentation, and data entry while working from a wirelessly equipped company vehicle.
- Maintain organized and accurate estimating records.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of electric utility construction, high-voltage electrical systems, or closely related infrastructure work.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, prints, maps, specifications, and work orders.
- Ability to recognize discrepancies, missing information, and potential inefficiencies within project documents.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate estimates.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with engineers, planners, project managers, superintendents, estimators, and field crews.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Ability to interpret maps, aerial photographs, and satellite imagery.
- Ability to travel regularly to project locations and perform field assessments.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet applicable company driving requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will have:
- Previous experience working as a lineworker.
- Project management experience within electric utility construction or a related industry.
- Extensive working knowledge of electric transmission, distribution, and substation construction and maintenance.
- Experience estimating or pricing electric utility construction projects.
- Experience with utility work-management, estimating, or project-pricing systems.
- Experience coordinating work with utilities, engineers, general contractors, field planners, and construction crews.
Work Environment
This position involves a combination of office-based and field-based work. The employee will frequently travel to project locations and may perform assessments from a wirelessly equipped company vehicle.
Fieldwork may involve exposure to changing weather conditions, construction areas, uneven terrain, traffic, noise, dust, and active utility infrastructure. The employee must follow all company, customer, and regulatory safety requirements.

Compensation
The anticipated salary range for this position is $90,000 to $150,000 per year.
The salary offered to the selected candidate will be based on relevant experience, qualifications, skills, demonstrated utility-industry knowledge, internal equity, and the responsibilities assigned to the position.
This position may also be eligible for profit sharing and a yearly bonus in accordance with the terms and eligibility requirements of the applicable company plans. Bonus and profit-sharing payments are not guaranteed unless otherwise stated in writing.
