Position Summary

The position provides support to the clinic provider at San Juan College Student Health Center to assist with operations. The role is responsible for administrative and clinic tasks such as maintaining patient records, preparing patients and rooms for examination, assisting providers with exams, and performing front-desk tasks.

CLINICAL DUTIES

Takes patient medical history.

Explains treatment procedures to patients.

Prepares patients for examinations (ex. Take vitals)

Assists provider during examinations as needed.

Collects and prepares laboratory specimens.

Performs basic lab tests (ex. Rapid strep, rapid flu etc)

Prepares and administers medications: including by intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections—including vaccinations/immunizations, as directed by a licensed provider.

Takes electrocardiograms.

Assists with wound care and changing dressings.

Removes sutures.

Prepares equipment and exam rooms, clean rooms and instruments.

Equips exam rooms with appropriate supplies.

Maintains logs and required checks (ex. Fridge temperatures, expired medications, lab controls etc.)

Performs other duties as assigned.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

Answers telephone and greet visitors; provides information and assistance to students and other visitors; refers to appropriate personnel; takes messages and makes appointments.

Updates patient medical records (obtaining consents and forms).

Arranges for laboratory services, assist with referrals.

Assists in monitoring program and institutional budgets and expenses.

Prepares purchase orders and spend authorizations.

Sorts and distributes incoming mail.

Maintains program files and records.

Schedules appointments; makes travel arrangements.

Maintains office and clinic supply inventory; makes purchases as needed.

Serves on college committees.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.

Knowledge of college and program policies and procedures.

Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs (Electronic Health Record).

Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.

Skill in the use of such office equipment as a computer, scanner, fax machine, and copier.

Skill in oral and written communication.

Knowledge of patient care and examination procedures.

Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Firm grasp on medical practices, administrative processes, and organizational policies.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Health Center Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and college and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of clinical and administrative duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position.

The purpose of this position is to provide administrative and clinical support for the operations of the Student Health Center. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of program operations.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, students and members of the general public.

Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, give medical education and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.

The work is typically performed in an office. The employee is at times exposed to contagious or infectious diseases. The use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves is required.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

Completion of an accredited medical assistance certification program (ex. CMA AAMA Certification, RMA certification)

American Heart Association-Basic Life Support Certificate
