About Web Surfing Studios
Web Surfing Studios (WSS) is a developer community focused on helping aspiring and junior software engineers gain real-world experience.
Members learn by building software, working with other developers, participating in code reviews, using professional development workflows, and contributing to real projects they can showcase in their portfolios.
WSS has been operating for more than five years and has a growing community of developers working across a variety of projects and technologies.
About the Role
We are looking for a Volunteer Program Lead to help lead the technical and educational side of WSS.
You’ll work alongside the existing Program Lead to mentor developers, support project teams, improve our development processes, and help members grow into stronger software engineers.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You’ll spend time working with developers, reviewing code, helping solve technical problems, facilitating development teams, and shaping how the program operates.
What You'll Do
- Mentor junior and aspiring software engineers
- Lead and support development teams working on WSS projects
- Conduct code reviews and provide constructive technical feedback
- Help developers troubleshoot technical problems
- Facilitate sprint planning, refinement, and other development meetings
- Help members understand professional software development practices
- Help improve WSS's onboarding, curriculum, and development processes
- Establish and reinforce coding and engineering best practices
- Help determine technical direction and project priorities
- Identify opportunities for members to take on additional responsibility
- Help develop future technical leaders within the WSS community
- Work with the Program Lead to improve the overall structure, processes, and culture of the program
What We're Looking For
We're looking for an experienced software engineer or an advanced junior engineer with real-world development experience who enjoys mentoring others, solving technical problems, and helping teams succeed.
You should have solid software development fundamentals, good communication skills, and an interest in taking on leadership responsibilities. Experience with .NET/C#, web development, cloud platforms, DevOps, AI, or distributed systems is helpful, but we're open to engineers with other technical backgrounds.
The most important qualities are a willingness to mentor, strong problem-solving skills, reliability, and an interest in helping other developers grow.
Time Commitment
The expected commitment is 5–10 hours per week, primarily during after-hours and evenings.
The schedule is flexible. Consistent participation is important so that developers and project teams have reliable access to their Program Lead.
