The Technical Writer is responsible for developing, validating, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation that supports field service operations, while ensuring service procedures are accurate, compliant, and executable in real-world environments. This role partners closely with Field Service Engineers, Engineering, Training, and Quality teams to observe field activities, validate work instructions, and identify opportunities to improve documentation, process consistency, and operational excellence.
In addition to technical writing responsibilities, the Technical Writer conducts field audits and process verification to evaluate adherence to company procedures, quality standards, safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines. The role analyzes audit findings, supports corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and drives continuous improvement initiatives that enhance service quality, reduce operational risk, and ensure standardized execution across the field organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Develop, write, edit, and maintain technical documents, work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), installation guides, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting documentation.
· Conduct routine and ad hoc audits of field service activities to verify compliance with approved procedures, quality standards, and company policies.
· Perform field observations by working alongside Field Service Engineers during equipment installation, preventive maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting activities.
· Validate that documented procedures accurately reflect field practices and are practical, safe, and executable.
· Collaborate with Engineering, Product Development, Training, and Field Service teams to create, revise, and improve technical documentation.
· Review audit findings to identify process gaps, non-conformances, documentation deficiencies, and compliance risks.
· Lead or support root cause analysis and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) activities to address identified issues.
· Track corrective actions through completion and verify the effectiveness of implemented improvements.
· Ensure field personnel consistently follow approved procedures, work instructions, and quality system requirements.
· Monitor compliance with applicable safety regulations, company safety policies, and customer site requirements during field operations.
· Maintain accurate audit reports, technical documentation, revision histories, and quality records.
· Analyze audit trends and performance metrics to identify recurring issues and recommend process improvements.
· Support document control processes, including version control, document approvals, and change management.
· Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on standardization, operational efficiency, documentation quality, and service excellence.
· Assist in developing training materials and documentation that support technician onboarding and ongoing technical development.
· Communicate audit results, documentation updates, and process recommendations to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
· Travel to customer sites as needed to observe field operations, validate procedures, and support documentation improvements.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Engineering, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, Quality, or a related technical field; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience creating technical documentation in a manufacturing, semiconductor, industrial equipment, or field service environment.
- Experience developing and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, service manuals, technical guides, and process documentation.
- Working knowledge of quality management systems, document control, and change management processes.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, technical specifications, and service documentation.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise documentation.
- Excellent organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify process gaps and recommend improvements.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and diagramming software.
- Ability to travel up to 30% to customer sites and regional offices to observe field operations and validate documentation.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting semiconductor equipment, field service engineering, or advanced manufacturing environments.
- Experience conducting process audits, field observations, or quality compliance assessments.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, CAPA processes, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience with document management systems (DMS), quality management systems (QMS), or product lifecycle management (PLM) software.
- Knowledge of semiconductor equipment installation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair processes.
- Experience creating technical training materials, job aids, and instructional content.
- ASQ Quality Auditor (CQA), Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA), or Technical Writing certification is a plus.
- Lean, Six Sigma Green Belt, or other continuous improvement certification is preferred.
