Full Job Description

The Executive Director serves as the primary leader, advocate, and public representative of Allied Arts of Whatcom County. This role focuses on strengthening the organization’s role as a central connector and champion for the arts through partnerships, fundraising, and strategic leadership.

The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors to guide the organization’s vision and sustainability while supporting staff responsible for program implementation. Much of the role involves relationship building across the arts community, civic organizations, and local institutions.

The Executive Director also leads the organization’s fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor development, and sponsorship cultivation.

Key Responsibilities

Community Leadership & Advocacy

Serve as the primary ambassador for Allied Arts within the community.

Responsibilities include:

Building relationships with artists, arts organizations, and community partners
Representing Allied Arts in regional conversations about arts and culture
Advocating for the role of the arts in the community
Participating in civic and cultural leadership forums
Working toward Allied Arts having a leadership role in initiatives such as the proposed Whatcom County Arts and Culture Committee

Partnerships & Community Engagement

Develop strategic partnerships that strengthen the regional arts ecosystem.

Responsibilities include:

Building collaborations with local arts organizations, schools, and community groups
Supporting initiatives that elevate emerging artists
Identifying opportunities for shared programs and community impact
Strengthening Allied Arts’ role as a connector within the arts community

Fundraising & Grant Development

Lead the organization’s fundraising strategy.

Responsibilities include:

Researching and writing grant applications
Managing grant reporting and compliance
Cultivating donor relationships
Identifying sponsorship opportunities
Working with the board to support fundraising initiatives

Organizational Leadership

Provide strategic leadership and ensure the organization operates effectively.

Responsibilities include:

Working with the Board of Directors to guide strategic planning
Monitoring organizational goals and priorities
Supporting staff and ensuring projects move forward
Managing organizational operations and systems
Ensuring compliance with nonprofit regulations

Financial Oversight

Work with the bookkeeper and board treasurer to maintain financial health.

Responsibilities include:

Creating and monitoring organizational budgets
Supporting responsible use of grant funding
Reviewing financial reports and guiding financial decisions
Supporting long-term financial sustainability

Staff & Organizational Leadership

Provide leadership and oversight for all staff and organizational functions.

Responsibilities include:

Supervising and supporting all staff positions across programs, marketing, and finance
Providing clear direction and priorities aligned with the organization’s strategic goals
Ensuring staff projects and programs are progressing on schedule and within budget
Facilitating regular staff communication and coordination across departments
Supporting staff problem-solving and decision-making when challenges arise
Encouraging a collaborative, efficient, and mission-focused team culture
Monitoring staff workload and helping prioritize organizational efforts when capacity is limited

The Executive Director focuses on organizational leadership and oversight, while staff managers lead the day-to-day implementation of programs and operations.
