The Associate Buyer role is a full-time position based in St. Louis, Missouri. In this capacity, you will swiftly evaluate items, negotiate prices, and purchase collectible items directly from clients. These items are then assessed, cleaned, and prepared for resale through various venues, including auctions. A successful Associate Buyer will cultivate a deep understanding of the items we acquire and develop the industry expertise necessary to confidently communicate product value and make informed purchasing decisions. While not traveling, job duties include roles in eCommerce, marketing, inventory management, administration, IT, photography, sales, and customer service. The Associate Buyer will report directly to their assigned Buy Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct extensive travel to facilitate our Great Estate Buying Event℠ at various retail jewelry stores across the country.
- Assess and acquire jewelry, diamonds, art, silver, gold, coins, antiques, and other valuable items.
- Attend at least 30 sponsored buying events annually, negotiating prices and purchasing items such as jewelry, diamonds, watches, sterling silver, gold, coins, currency, fine art, memorabilia, and autographs.
- Provide outstanding customer service to both sponsors and customers, ensuring smooth and efficient sales transactions.
- Accurately identify and catalog items for resale through various venues, including online auctions.
- Adhere to company policies and procedures for purchasing and office task management.
- Support various departments including eCommerce, marketing, inventory, administration, IT, photography, sales, and customer service with miscellaneous office duties.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, and suppliers.
- Keep precise records of all purchases and transactions.
- Stay informed about market trends and pricing to make well-informed purchasing decisions.
- Manage frequent travel, independently handling trips of 4-5 consecutive days, totaling 12-16 days per month and at least 30 times per year.
- Use keen visual skills to closely inspect and identify fine print and hallmarks.
- Deliver exceptional customer service in a fast-paced environment.
- Maintain a confident, positive, and professional demeanor.
- Communicate clearly and reason effectively.
- Pay close attention to detail.
- Excel in a laid-back yet fast-paced and rapidly growing company environment.
- Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Regularly lift 40-50 lbs with ease.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, but exceptions may be made for the right candidate.
- Strong interest in antiques, jewelry, art, or related fields.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Quick learner with intellectual curiosity and attention to detail.
- Self-driven to become an industry expert.
- Ability to travel extensively and work independently.
- Experience in retail sales, jewelry sales, or similar fields is a plus but not required.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
- Graduate Gemologist Diploma from GIA.
- Previous experience in estate buying or a related field.
- Knowledge of market trends and pricing in antiques and collectibles.
