Full Job Description

Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Behavior Specialist, assist with conducting life skill groups and clinical evaluations of

individuals; provide direct support to staff to assist individuals in achieving more effective personal, social,

educational, and vocational development and adjustment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist with facilitation of discussion with individuals, and/or families to help them understand problems.

Observe individuals, listen to their concerns, record their observations and report to the Behavior

Specialist about any unusual behavior.

Assist with the collection of information about individuals using interviews, case histories, observational

techniques, and other assessment methods.

Gather data and other behavioral records to provide to the Behavior Specialist’s to support the

development of functional behavior assessments, behavior plans, and other behavioral supports.

Model appropriate implementation of behavior support plans under the supervision of the Behavior

Specialists.

Participate in the collaboration of other professionals to discuss therapies, treatments, counseling

resources, or techniques.

Provide direct care duties, including activities of daily living, as assigned. Redirect and/or stabilize

behavior issues related to the individuals being served.

Assist with documentation of progress of goals, activities, response to treatment, and progress in a clear,

concise, and timely manner.

Review RIA’s to ensure accuracy and put up on the OWDDD database.

Record monthly target behaviors and provide needed reports.

Participation, facilitation, and documentation of the treatment review team process, in conjunction with the

Behavior Specialists and clinical team.

Perform visits as assigned to IRA at times conducive to direct observations of individuals served and

attended assigned IRA staff meeting.

Member of the internal audit team as assigned.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Associates degree in a human services related field OR

3 years’ experience working in the OPWDD system or other related human services field.

Qualifications and knowledge:

Excellent verbal, written, and active listening skills.

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Knowledge of all appropriate ethical, professional, and legal standards.

Maintain all OPWDD required trainings.

Understands and respects the unique needs of the individuals served and their families/advocates.

Knowledge of the NYS Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and prefer experience with individuals who are dually diagnosed (developmentally disabled and mental health disorders).

Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment services including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and special education.

Knowledge of human behavior and performance, individual differences in ability, personality, and interests.

Ability to multi-task in a fast paced, team oriented environment. Strong collaboration skills.

Excellent problem-solving skills, including a proactive approach to problem solving.

Demonstrates energy and enthusiasm for working with OPWDD population.

Demonstrate appropriate/professional interpersonal skills with agency personnel, individuals, and their families/advocates.

Valid NYS driver’s license.

Maintain current SCIP-R

Ability to obtain SCIP-R Trainer status.

Proficient with Microsoft Software and Windows operating systems.

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally

Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.

Fingering is required regularly for typing and the use of hands in a repetitive motion.

Regularly required to talk and hear with the ability to exchange and receive detailed information.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data, viewing computer screens.

Required to function around disabled individuals.

Working conditions of this position do not substantially expose workers to adverse environmental conditions and are typical of an indoor work environment.
